Maybe the males don't wear interesting T-shirts?
I was thinking about that the other day. Not sure of the reason.
The majority of students who study English are female - there are only 2 males in my classes this year - but there is no doubt that the English statements on their T-shirts are far and away more likely to be problematic.
I sometimes think it is a case of fashion sense overcoming common sense.
It does, however, highlight a problem found in the classroom; students may master the meaning of many words, but when those words are combined in a sentence there is often a lack of comprehension. That situation is compounded by idiomatic usage and further exacerbated by statements capable of bearing more than one meaning.
Males anywhere are more conservative on the rare occasions they bother buying clothes. They tend to buy a label T-shirt that identifies with a sport and the name of a team or player is well known to them. Just about the only memorable T-shirt worn by a male that I have seen this year is in the movie 'Notting Hill.'
Males might be thick as two bricks, and English- challenged, but not too many would make the mistake of wearing this T-shirt:
