Fonts - should be buttons for bold, italic, and underline displayed, as well as drop-down for size and typeface. Can also right click inside document and select Font (comes with preview - very nice function). Right-clicking can also let you mess with indents for a single paragraph (just chose Paragraph from the righ-click menu.
CTRL-Enter forces a page break.
Tabs can be set from the ruler. Can get fairly complex - hanging indents and thing. Can also set indents by clicking File, Page Setup. That screen also lets you set up margins, paper size, etc.
If they just give you a list of tasks and don't stare over your shoulder, the Help menu in MS Word is (unlike most Help files) very helpful.
The main thing to worry about is if they want you to accomplish a task in 1 and only 1 way. Most items in MS Office can be gotten to in multiple ways, but I have seen test that incorrectly are based on the concept of their being only 1 way to accomplish something.
Open a copy and try the stuff I suggested. Play with the software some and it will get easier.
