I have my second interview for this great job on Tuesday. One part of the second interview is a Windows/Microsoft Word test. I am not skilled at the computer. I took a similiar test last week at another place and only scored a 56% on it. The test consisted of having to do various functions on Word. Things like changing the font, tabs, page size etc... The way I usually accomplish these tasks is through a series of trial and error. It sometimes takes me a few minutes to do it but I eventually figure it out. Unfortunately with a test, if you don't get it right the first time, you fail that question.
I want nothing more than to return to China and this job will let me do that. Can any of you help me with a cheat sheet. Things like basic Word functions and how to do them??

Fonts - should be buttons for bold, italic, and underline displayed, as well as drop-down for size and typeface. Can also right click inside document and select Font (comes with preview - very nice function). Right-clicking can also let you mess with indents for a single paragraph (just chose Paragraph from the righ-click menu.
CTRL-Enter forces a page break.
Tabs can be set from the ruler. Can get fairly complex - hanging indents and thing. Can also set indents by clicking File, Page Setup. That screen also lets you set up margins, paper size, etc.
If they just give you a list of tasks and don't stare over your shoulder, the Help menu in MS Word is (unlike most Help files) very helpful.
The main thing to worry about is if they want you to accomplish a task in 1 and only 1 way. Most items in MS Office can be gotten to in multiple ways, but I have seen test that incorrectly are based on the concept of their being only 1 way to accomplish something.
Open a copy and try the stuff I suggested. Play with the software some and it will get easier.

Jeez, I've been trying and trying to find you a summary chart but getting nowhere. They're out there, but my internet access has been infuriatingly slow all day and I can't really function in a number of sites I really need...like Yahoo Search... llllllllll

My best advice might be to just sit down with it as long as you can, and start typing. Word does at least come with some tutorials and help resources. Sure, they're major boring bqbqbqbqbq , but they will teach you the basics...

I plan to spend the next few days playing around with the program, trying to figure things out. If I can just get through this, I think I'll have the job locked up.

And it's actually worth it. MS-Office or Open Office or some similar package can be incredibly handy to know how to use.

Another advantage. Most of the basic functions are very similar across major office packages. Get a good understanding of any one, and the others won't be hard to figure out.

This looks like a pretty basic set of tutorials that might help you with basic Word functions. It even has a short quiz after each section. (If your lucky, it'll be similar to the test they give you at your next interview!)

I had no problem with the functions of Windows. I can't type 35 words a minute however. I also had trouble with the copy. I have always copied by right clicking. This computer however would not let me do it like that. I only had 4 minutes to complete 6 tasks and I used up almost 3 trying to figure out the copy.
Back to job-hunting llllllllll llllllllll llllllllll

Bad luck Babala. 35 words a minute sounds pretty fast to me.
My experience is that Word will only let you right click to cut/copy/paste in certain circumstances. Better to use the cut/copy/paste buttons up at the top of the screen. They always work.
Two general points about Word. First, it's an immense application. Pretty much any graphic design technique you've seen can probably be done one way or another in Word. This makes it difficult for the beginner because you have to find your way through hundreds of functions you don't need to get to the ones you do. The default toolbars contain the simpler functions most basic users need, but have a habit of hiding functions if you don't use them for a while. So say for example it's been a while since you made any text bold, the "bold text" button is liable to disappear, and you have to make it appear again (look for a little arrow somewhere to the right of where it used to be).
The best versions of Word are generally considered to be Word 2000 and the very similar Word 2003. Word 2007 seems to be pretty universally hated by all reviewers - harder to use and with some pointless gimmicks in the interface. If you did your test on Word 2007, Babala, that may well have been an extra obstacle.
