My Passion is Research, Publication, Professorship; Not Teaching; Where to Go?

Hi Everyone,

Before I went into teaching abroad, I was a research assistant at a major US university.

I loved exploring new ideas, data crunching, and being sought out for my knowledge. I got some minor publications and later did some presentations.

Sadly, my mentor passed away, and our program was canceled. Due to financial necessity, I started teaching abroad. While I have done okay, it is not my passion.

1. Is there any where in China I could use this penchant?

There must be some places where a person without Chinese language skills can do research for education companies, but I am not sure where.

2. As for being a professor, there are university teaching jobs. Granted, these jobs are very lowly paid (only 10,000 RMB a month). They barely have any research component.

I feel the best jobs have a single cohort, only a few classes a week, and do something fun. As an example "teach a dozen students American English literature since 1900. Read a book a week, discuss it, grade essays."

Contact Chinese professors who regularly publish in English language journals about fields you are interested in.  If you want it to be more than a "please give me a job" letter, read a few of their papers and make a few comments about them.

1. I appreciate that advice!

2. My wife in fact introduced me to a contact of hers, who publishes some of his tech work in engineering. Maybe there is a way I can get ideas from China to the US, etc.

I believe I read somewhere that China has also launched some of its own English language sci/tech journals.  If you can find some of those, that would provide you with more professors to try to contact.
