Free e-books from Baen
« on: June 10, 2015, 08:07:50 PM »
I hope everyone here already knows about gutenberg.org, a fine source for freel downloadable books in text, e-book or HTML formats. Most should; both I & others have recommended it before. It has only older books for which copyright has expired, so it is great if you want classics -- complete Mark Twain, Lewis Carol, Dickens, Kipling, Bronte sisters, Jane Austen, Sherlock Holmes, Peter Pan, Shakespeare,... -- or traditional cookbooks or various other things, but not useful for anything recent.

Here's another source. Baen are known as a fairly large publisher of sci-fi. They seem to have decided to give away things that don't sell, all either sci-fi or non-fiction. There is a lot of it. No doubt much crud, but likely some are worthwhile. Also, perhaps some of the space-opera shoot-em-up stuff that most of us would consider crud would appeal to some of our students where "good literature" might not.
