Air Purifiers, masks, etc.
« on: February 07, 2013, 05:55:37 PM »
These have come up in at least two other threads, but weren't really the main focus of the discussion.

I thought a separate topic specifically about experiences with different air purifiers, masks, etc. would be worthwhile.

Brands, models, prices, effectiveness, where to buy, and that sort of stuff all in one place.

So, which ones suck while sucking away your money and which ones suck away the pollutants?

Air purifier
« Reply #1 on: March 11, 2013, 02:33:15 PM »
I am looking into buying an air purifier or two.  My apartment is about 75 sq meters. I am thinking of getting two smaller units, one for the bdr and the other for the living room.

Any recommendations, past experiences, words of wisdom, etc...?  Of course, economical is best.  Then again, I know you get what you pay for.

Yes.  I did a search and saw that there was not a dedicated thread, just mentioned in passing.

Thanks for expanding the topic.

I look forward to responses.

I found this link on the link provided by Fullricebowl from the thread - Beijing air pollution.  http://www.aqicn.info/city/beijing/

http://www.greenpeace.org/eastasia/campaigns/air-pollution/problems/coal-hard-truth-air-pollution/

It discusses PM2.5, masks, etc...

Any new advice on the air purifier topic?  The link referred to in the earlier post says that a low-end purifier costs 13,000 RMB and that was two years ago.  If that's what it takes to filter the mud out of the air supply, I'm sure it's worth it, but really???

Check out the thread on the DIY air purifier.

http://raoulschinasaloon.com/index.php?topic=8741.0

I tried one, not the one from the website I ordered my own bits from ta.obao and tied em together with old shoestring using old cloth to plug any holes (my filter was too narrow)

Xiaomi is making one that looks cool.

Just get any HEPA Fuller and you should be fine. The blue air filters are really good, but something is better than nothing.

In bought a Honeywell HEPA purifier at the beginning of winter, got it from Taobao. They call it a desk top model, but it's actually the size of a ghetto blaster so works best stuck on a table you're not using. I smoke and I live with a dog, it's a small flat, three main rooms.

I would turn it on when I left for class and when I came home after class my flat smelt fresh, and my dog's asthma/ tracheal collapse choking issues cleared up within a day or two of buying it. I reckon it works.

I paid just on 500rmb, for the unit and the power transformer that came with it, it's US made so needed a transformer.

Smalk enough to carry from room to room, where the pollutants are and big enough to be effective.

Aside from my goose down quilt, it was my best purchase for all of last year.

I like this idea.  Can I carry it around with me on my shoulder?  Maybe attach a funnel from its output to my mouth?  A sort of portable iron lung.

I'm looking to buy a humidifier / air purifier combo. Anyone got any suggestions? I looked on Taobao and they're going for over 3,000yuan. Would it be cheaper to get two separate machines? One humidifier and one Air purifier? I really need the humidifier to prevent mold.

Hi;

Forgive me if this has already been addressed recently, but I'm looking for a good air purifier for my 60 sq meter apartment and wondering if there's a consensus on a brand and type. I heard the Honeywell HEPA purifier mentioned which sounds good, but does anyone have another preference from their experience?

Thanks.

first piece of advice, don't overspend. look at the science behind the tech.

In my house, i'm using smartair filters which run me 200 rmb a piece and replacement filters are 80rmb off taobao. they work just as well as the big brands but uglier. you can even build them yourself.

in my bars and restaurants, i have Xiaomi units everywhere where guests are, as they're nice and pretty but still deploy smartair in the kitchen and back areas.
