While I knew little about his personal life and the little I did know wasn't too flash, this man's music was wonderful.

Vale Pavarotti

Quote
LUCIANO PAVAROTTI, the world's most loved opera singer, died at his home in the northern Italian town of Modena after battling cancer. The 71-year-old tenor popularised many opera works, singing in football stadiums as well as grand opera houses.

God bless his soul. This was one of the greatest singers of 20th and 21st centuries.

I saw him in concert in Montreal, center floor, ten rows from the stage, absolutely incredible!   Irregardless of whether one is a fan of opera or not, he was a monumental influence in making opera more accessible to the masses and paved the way for more 'poppy' artists like Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban.  And his efforts to raise awareness through tours (such as the Children of War- Bosnia) where he teamed up with mainstream musicians should also be remembered.

The man had an amazing voice and did a lot for the cause of opera and classical music. His memory deserves enormous respect.

Uh, 'irregardless'? cb

Add to his reputation the feat of bringing operatic and Classical voice to the general public.  He made it accessible.  What a huge feat!  He did for his music what the Blues Brothers did for blues, Chuck Mangione did for jazz, and Billy Idol did for punk: gave regular shmoes an entry point into a daunting, previously elitist musical genre.

Deaths like this make me feel good: a life well lived.

RIP Pavarotti.

A great voice falls silent.
