Next up is Yining/Zhaosu, the first in a series from out west.

downtown Yining, lots of people there to keep us harmonious

Ili River

Outdoor dining in Yining. Because there is only one time zone, we would find ourselves eating dinner at what was officially almost 11pm, even though the sun was just setting.

New friends in Zhaosu. So many different ethnic groups here it was unbelievable, even people with blond hair and blue eyes.

Just outside Zhaosu

Yes both in far western XJ, very close to Kazakh border. Overnight trains and buses from Urumqi to Yining, then a couple hours by bus south Zhaosu (unless they are being wary of foreigners and make you get out at every checkpoint-we had 5 or 6-to check documents and the trip takes twice a long and everyone else on the bus hates you).
