fozzwald, thanks for that link.

Good stuff as you said.

The Kaiser Kuo part brings back memories, especially the part about the Belgrade bombing in 99.

I don't know if you can get to it in China or not, but if you can I highly recommend streaming this week's Public Radio show This American Life. It's about Americans living as long-term expats in China, and it's particularly well-done and thought-provoking. Most of it will totally resonate with non-Americans as well.

Actually, Fozzie, your link is better...I'm pretty sure it'll work in China, while I'm not at all sure mine will.

I heard the show on the radio tonight and posted on it before reading. When I saw your thread on the topic, I just merged mine into yours...

I like the line about getting stared at in the same way an American would stare if a giraffe walked down the street.

Really interesting- I'd actually never listened to one of their podcasts before, but I'll make an effort to search through their archive.

If I knew about the Belgrade Embassy bombing in 1999 I had forgotten a long time ago. Kind of scary how quickly nationalism could override friendship- or how quickly propaganda campaigns can unite people together (us against them).

I loved the different perspectives-the whole show was just put together really well. They've gained a listener!

A very interesting podcast Raoul.  I can vividly remember being in Shanghai in 1999 and my brother in Law had a look of urgency on his face when he said we had to go back to his place immediately as things were not good - we were in the middle of a street demonstration
in WaiHai Rd and things were getting decidedly unfriendly.

So many wise and profoundly accurate observations in this series of interviews.

As the only "American living in China" most of my friends know, I got this link forwarded to me a bunch. One of my friends said, "I didn't understand it, but you probably will."  th_ah

I just wish they'd had some women or minorities (other than Chinese, I guess) on the show.
