Are you suggesting they go by what is stamped in your passport? Don't they have some sort of tracking system?

Should have but since enforcement of rules can be worked around for various reasons and passport numbers change (nobody cares about names) then there is a chance this can work.

My wife went to her hometown where her Hukou is at and got me a 6 month L visa. I am somewhat happy about that, but was disappointed that it was not one year. Sort of like getting a boloney sandwich when you were expecting Prime Rib.

But I was a nervous wreck in the three hours after she left, and was relieved at her phone call. My passport expires next year in September, so what I will probably do is to go back to the USA, with a letter from a new employer, get a new passport, get my Z and then return back to China.

Any old timers up in Jiangsu? Has anyone gotten a renewal?

Just bumping this, as it seems this issue is still rumbling along, and many of us have been here longer than 5 years.

My school have said it does not affect us (joint venture), but anyway here's a recent post from you know where about a long-termer fallen afoul of it:

Once again, I have heard of a couple of long-termers (in Wuhan FWIW) getting hit with this rule as contract time rolls around again.  I am changing jobs and provinces so I really hope this isn't going to be a problem.

Anyone else?

I have a coworker in Beijing who is being hit with this, while other co-workers who have well over five years aren't being affected at all. Not sure how this is being applied.

Same thing in Sichuan. The only ones I know of that can work around this issue are the ones that are married to Chinese nationals.

I'm in my 6th contract year at the same uni. A co-worker started at the same time I did and he's still here. (He's married to one of the Chinese teachers.) I've been in China more than 8 years, although I do go back to my home country about once a year.

At my school we have one foreign teacher about to begin his 7th year. (He's japanese and not married to anyone.) He's a great teacher and the school wants him as long as he wants to stay.

On the other hand, last year they dismissed a teacher saying it was due to the "5 year rule." TIC!
