Have any of you been involved in importing a car and subsequently selling it?

Your FEC allows you to import one car tax-free per year…I'm thinking about getting a used car the next time I'm home, shipping it over, driving it for the next couple of years, and then selling it when we leave. The cunning part of my plan (so cunning you could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel) is to buy a luxury car so we could hopefully profit from the eventual sale.

Anyway, I'd be curious to hear your experiences/knowledge/thoughts.

A friend of mine (Chinese) wanted to import some classic cars for sale, maybe some early model American muscle cars.
He was told that China doesn't allow the import of any used car model, regardless of vintage status or not.
It's not first hand knowledge just something he told me.
I wanted to import a used Japanese model car, as they have very strict regulations regarding how long you can drive a car before it has to be taken off the road.
I made some casual enquiries with some friends of mine in the import industry, and all of the information came back that I couldn't import used models.
I didn't follow up on any of it though, just made some casual enquiries and didn't follow up.

I've read that cars past a certain age cannot be imported under any circumstances, so that might be what precludes importing classic cars.

According to the link above, it's fine to import a used car if it is for personal use. I have friends who have acted as a sort of shill to import used cars before, so unless the rules have changed, importing something used shouldn't be a problem. But I'll have to look into it.

Have none of you been approached to use your FEC to import a car before? I used to be asked fairly regularly. Hasn't happened in the past year or so, but I've assumed that since I'm now a boring married person I'm just not hanging around the right types to be asked.

I've been approached about this a couple of times - offered a relatively small amount of cash to put my signature to something saying it's my car - seemed a bit too shady for a relatively small amount of moolah.
