... I don't understand Chinese males' need to pull their T-shirt up to their armpits and walk/sit around. I tried it and it's uncomfortable. If they're hot, why not just take the friggin' thing off? (If you go to Korea don't try this - it's guaranteed to get 'Mr. Kim' upset). th_ah

Nothing much to explain. It cools them off a little. Just because it's not comfortable for you doesn't mean it's not comfortable for someone else.

I don't find squatting all that comfortable but plenty of people here squat as a rest position.

It's what they do...it makes them comfy...pure and simple....

Yeah I don't understand that, all the heat goes to my shoulders not my belly

There are a million things like that, Chinese people leave plastic umbrellas open to dry off until you tell them that plastic doesn't work like that

I leave my umbrella open to dry off, otherwise I have a sodden mass leaking water through my bag. My camera does not like that.

Many of the el cheapo umbrellas, of the fold up variety, seem to act as sponges and shaking them just gets rid of surface water.

ummm ...kitano, what should I do to dry an umbrella?

...I don't understand... you.  th_ah

An umbrella made of any material (folding or otherwise) will dry off much faster the larger the surface area exposed to the air - so the water can evaporate. If it's closed, the water will be trapped between the pleats... especially with plastic.

How does plastic 'work'?

Life is becoming more and more of a mystery the more questions I ask.  th_m

If you are in a situation where you have to put your umbrella in your bag when it is still wet you can put it in a small plastic bag.

It will dry faster if you leave it open but it's only a matter of minutes and that way you don't have to have a massive pile of umbrellas everywhere

an "umbrella farm" in the hallways, as I call it. And after everyone "harvests" their umbrellas after class, the wet floor left behind is ripe for someone to slip and fall and hurt themselves. I know, it happened to me once.

I tried spinning the umbrella... but the more rapidly I went the dizier I got. Eventually, I fell down - and the umbrella still wasn't dry.

In the dryer, there wasn't much room... and I kept banging my head every time it went around.

In the high heat of summer, you did used to see blokes here just strolling about in their Y-fronts (often paired with patent leather shoes, socks + optional fag packet tucked into the elastic of the Ys).  Perhaps the relentless march of progress has wiped this particular style off the map...or maybe it just hasn't got hot enough yet...

I assume underwear. Let me guess... probably pink - with black patent leather shoes and white socks.
