I have lived in China for close to 9 years now. All in Shenzhen. All 9 years in the same apartment complex (rented then bought). All 9 years in the same office.
Recently, I have had issues at the apartment complex and at the office building.
The apartment management office had this as a reply ... "if you don't like it, then leave. Sell your apartment and move".
The management office at work said almost the same thing (different issue, different management office) .... "if you don't like it then leave and move your office elsewhere".
The owner of the office flat also said "if you don't like it, you are free to break your lease and move. We have plenty of people willing to rent from us".
This seems to becoming more and more prevalent .... this attitude of "take it or leave it ... we don't care".
When I first arrived in China, people seemed much more willing to help and provide service .... now it's changing for the worst.
Aaaargh !!!!

I don't see this as a Western/Eastern thing. The world getting meaner and uglier knows no borders...
Part of it is that foreigners have become less "special" in many parts of China. People are less willing to kowtow to us.

Not a Western thing. If that happened to me in my condo in the US, I'd have legal recourse. In China you don't.

Legal recourse for what? He said he has issues and they answered, you can always sell your house. There's not necessarily anything illegal going on.
I thought the thread was about the concept of 'take it or leave it', not the specific issues that Yokie is having with both the apartment and school administrations.
It's my way or the highway.

Perhaps if we knew a little more about what the issues with the apartment and office were?

This is nothing new. Customer service in China has been this way for years. "STFU and get out then" is a common ideology in any restaurant, shop, or apparently housing complex. There are always more customers/tenants than they could possible need behind you.

The attitude is getting more prevalent however.
9 years ago, the "take it or leave it" was mostly with the bureaucracy .... now it has spread to almost all aspects of life in Shenzhen.
Customer Service has been getting worse. The lack-of-consideration attitude is gaining ground. Businesses are less customer-focused ....
This change is not a good one. It does not lead to a peaceful and enjoyable life. Stress levels are rising. Living standard is suffering.
I discuss this with Chinese. They all see it and feel it too .... but they are funny ... they all say "yes, it is terrible, everyone is getting so rude and self-centered" yet they do not see that they are "everyone" .... they have the same decline in consideration and service and customer-focus and caring and .....
