It's more like a stream but it has some small waterfalls. This park has a few different ways to navigate around and one of them is to stroll in the stream. Some of the waterfall areas have footholds and ropes attached so you can climb up inside the the waterfalls. It was a hot and beautiful day so it was quite nice strolling in the stream.

Great photos, Stil. The Li is the only river in China I have seen with clear water but going by your photos it may have changed.

Twelve years ago officials insisted that my girlfriend travel on the boat from Guilin to Yangshuo reserved for Chinese, while I would have to travel on the 'foreigners' boat. A policeman pointed to a sign that had the relevant regulation.

A local sidled up and offered to organise a small boat for us. We were wary of being ripped off but we ended up having a great trip on our own speed boat, with total control of places to stop for photos. We returned to Guilin on a small bus that stopped anywhere and everywhere, so got to see a lot more of the area. The total cost of the day was a lot less than the fares on the big cruise boats.

Anybody know if they have changed the rules?

There are no foreigner or Chinese only boats anymore but then again I didn't have that issue the first time I went in 2004. You can still rent the private speedboats.

The Li river is still pretty nice but the area has been rocked by storms recently. Tens of thousands of people displaced and hundreds of thousands of dollars lost in damages and so from run off and just the churning up of silt, the river right now looks worse than it actually is.

The area is far more commercialized than 8 years ago and although it was a holiday, I was still surprised at the number of people "relaxing themselves". West street in Yangshuo was pretty much a write off because of the amount of people.
