so, as I'm sure you've heard from your students umpteen times in the last few years  th_aw, the price of commodities (most noticably foodstuffs) has sky rocketed over the last few years.

I've never taken THAT much notice, I've always just gotten what I've needed and got on with it, tending to live a fairly humble lifestyle (with the occasional blowouts)...

anyway, today I went to Metro to pick up some food for dinner. I packed my trolley with veg and went away and paid, noting that it seemed more expensive that usual, but not thinking too much of it, I was in a hurry.

(here it comes) when I got home I checked the receipt. the price of 2 organic onions? 60 yuan.

I repeat, the price of 2 organic onions? 60 yuan.

Thats about 4 euro a piece.

...

please respond with similar tales of mind-meltingly expensive vegetables.

@brandex -

nice series, I've never seen that before, here's another one for the boozers among us:

as for the onion, I know I know, I bought an organic onion by accident and am now paying the price in guilt and humiliation.

however, how on earth are Chinese organic onions at least twice the price of Irish organic onions? what on earth is going on?

Ask EL to try to grow some onions and we may get some idea on how hard they are to grow in China. th_bf th_ah

Then there's the deflation size - packages are shrinking.  A single-serve plastic bottle of Coca Cola in China was 600 ml.  Now it's 500 ml.
The price didn't change. th_as th_as th_as

Based on the price, I think Fozzwaldus accidentally bought orgasmic onions. th_af

Veggies are cheap where I shop. If it said 'organic' on it I wouldn't believe it. I guess I might if I were shopping at Metro, but that's too far from where I live. I shop where the locals do. Apples used to be 3 something a jin and now they're almost 6. I thought it was seasonal, but it seems the higher price is here to stay.

Milk was about 5.90 a liter box when I moved to Dongguan 5 years ago. Now it's 8.60-8.90. Sometimes I find it for less than 8 kuai, but not very often.

A bucket of KFC (I know, I know, but sometimes the urge hits) used to cost 56. Now it's 72.

Five years ago the best deal in town for peanut butter was Metro and it was 12 yuan a jar. Now it's 22 at Metro for the same size. The foreign import stores have it for 26-28.

Those are the inflationary prices I've noticed.

wow, that's pricy. I must check out my local KFC see what it costs, I've actually never been in there except for very very late a night (it's 24 hours)

that said, it's only 12 yuan more that the going rate for 2 organic onions, aparently  th_bi

One head of cabbage costs 10RMB at our downstairs market (which isn't a Carrefour or anything, just a normal regular Chinese market). I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the cost of veggies but my husband griped about this one just the other day.

Oh I also remember that the Campbell's soup I sometimes buy at the import store has gone up in price from about 11RMB to 16RMB.

I'm not sure whether this is inflation of the bottle or deflation of the number of pills:
