If you have ever wondered why ambulances in China stop at traffic lights, eChinacities gives a clue to the answer:

In early February, a number of Hangzhou’s emergency ambulances were fitted with fare metres to let patients know the cost of the trip. Ambulances charge a standard fee of 10 RMB (within 3km) and 2 RMB for every kilometre thereafter (the metre begins as soon as the ambulance leaves the hospital and ends once it has arrived back at the hospital with the patient).

The article also sets out the rates for various services - CPR will set you back RMB100, but there is no indication of a refund for a failed attempt.   th_k

If you do end up in this position   snoopytrage you can now bargain for a cheaper rate. Just keep in mind that while you are arguing the toss the meter will still be running.

People visiting China may not realize that ambulances here are a taxi service, and may not contain any medically trained personnel in some regions.

Utterly insane, but still a better deal than an ambulance ride in the USA.  I wonder how much my insurance company had to shell out for the cardboard leg splint the ambulance drivers used to "treat" the snakebite on my foot. th_ah

In a case like this, your next of kin can give them your new postal address to send the bill to.  It should include something like row and plot number. th_u

25,000???  Must have been one hell of a long ride in the ambulance.

I have not heard of an ambulance refusing to transport someone who does not have money on them. To do so would mean making a return trip with zilch to show for it.

I imagine that they would prop you up and negotiate some form of delayed payment. They are, after all, in a position to negotiate from strength.

PS re CPR charge of RMB100
If I have to pay RMB100 for a service offering a 'happy ending' I want to be able to nominate the nurse. It is a standard procedure in another health related profession.

The 25 000 was for the hospital bills as well, his insurance refused to pay out as it was his own fault and he was left with the bill  th_ah

If he refused to pay it, would they have hooked him up to an IV full of baijiu until he got sick again? alcoholic

I just had an ambulance ride on Sunday. I think it cost me about 100RMB. I'm not really sure as I was in a pretty bad state when I was brought in but I do know that the hospital staff went into my wallet without my permission and took the money themselves.

I'm surprised the hospital allowed your friend to run up a bill like that. Usually they are after you to make sure you are paying day by day here.

To the nurse -
"Take me for a ride baby! On second thought, how about if you ride me and I teach you some 'western' culture? This is the reverse cowgirl... now say - giddyup!"

Plans to go home delayed until August to get my airfare paid for and try and save up some money but of course it doesn't help having to shell out for all the medical bills.
