Although I can neither confirm or deny the MIL's history of doing kung-fu on that bridge, she did mention being so terrified of it she had to cross with her eyes closed and being lead across by her friend. Perhaps she failed to mention that one time when she found herself halfway across the bridge and she encountered a sword wielding-warrior from Henan who threatened to steal all the chili peppers in the village.

I'll ask her next time I see her. I can't help but notice the chili peppers were not in short supply.

or maybe she told you, but it was in her local language so you couldn't understand her.  th_ah

Just to add one more photo to this thread-

The photo is of several woman wearing this white hat I saw all over in the region around the village I was staying in. Can anyone guess what the purpose of the hat is?

Hmmm th_m  White is the Oriental "Colour of Death/Mourning" .... Could it be that they are wearing them as an indication of their status as widows?

In chinese culture if a man wears a green hat it means he is being cuckolded. So wearing green hats in China is verboden.

When I saw these I thought for sure they had some kind of religious or deep cultural meaning (perhaps along the lines of what you mentioned, AMonk)- especially seeing as they were usually worn by older people.

Well, I was pretty disappointed to find out they are totally practical. There is a lot of coal in the region, so it a very common fuel source in individual homes- which makes the air fairly dusty/dirty- especially in winter. These hats are meant to keep people's hair clean- but the young people think they look too un-cool to wear them th_ah

Which really sucks because my high school colors were kelly green and black and my college colors were green and white and I so wanted to get a ballcap from my college, but Mrs. Casey would not hear of it.
