Hello everyone...This is my first obligatory newbie post. I'm slated to arrive in China this coming Saturday (July 23rd) and I will be teaching in Nanjing. I have a bunch of questions but I read Raouls warning that this is not wikipedia so I won't ask any questions.

I'm coming from the states and if there is anything crucial I should do before I leave don't hesitate to tell me.  Wink

Anyway, glad to meet you all!

Best things to pack are a bucketload of patience, tolerance and a big bag of understanding. Enjoy the adventure, and it will be an adventure! And good luck with the new gig!

First of all, welcome, Ganbare! th_ag

I read Raouls warning that this is not wikipedia so I won't ask any questions.

No, no, no...please give my request (really NOT a warning...) another read!
In essence it say we DO want you to ask questions, all you want. Answering newbie questions and trying to steer them right is a big part of what The Saloon is all about.

I was simply requesting that people not post 20-30 (or more) questions all at the same time. th_bj

Greetings! First post from a guy set on coming to China, at least focusing on China jobs. I'm just completing my TESOL 100 hr. cert. I have BA in humanities and 4 yr. teaching experience. I started a little late, won't get my passport until middle of August. So. . . I'm open to advice here on where to look for jobs, etc.

Appreciate it.

You know, one oddball thing that I wish I had and that is not available in China: a wireless router with English menus. I can't forward ports for my torrent software, and my ratios are dwindling fast.

Welcome, chaps th_ag th_ag Now, I do heartily recommend that you take a gander at the room called "The Champagne Cabana" where you will find that the very first thread is called "Introductions"...introduce yourself there, so more members will know you have arrived.

Asking for how/where to find jobs in China is good, but it helps if you add some more info to your query, so the members here can be of better assistance. For instance, add to the query where in China you would like to work, what level of education system you would like to tackle, what job sites you have already visited, what jobs/positions you have already decided against and such things. It just makes it easier to assist you.
Also, if you scroll down a little on the opening page of the Saloon, you will find a room called "Info on employers" and "The contract zone". Now, our dear Duke most certainly did not mean that asking questions is  bad, but adding initiative to the asking makes it more easy to get answers. If you have come across a job somewhere and you are not sure it is spiffy, ask about it in the "Info" room, if some school has already offered you a contract, by all means post it in the "contract" room, so those used to Chinese contracts can look it over.
Also, before posting, take some time to make yourself acquainted with the frst couple of pages of posts in each room. You will, undoubtedly, find that there are already long threads on pretty much every topic, so post and continue those instead of starting an old topic anew. Again, this simply makes it easier for you to get answers to everything you can dream of and it makes it easier for the other members to find your questions.
BTW, it is a rule that new members buy an opening round,,,mine is a pint of absinthe with laudanum-infuced sugar and extra wormwood th_ag th_ag th_ag
Hope you will post massively and be as happy here as is possible th_ag th_ag th_ag

Hey this saloon has spirit! I like that! Thanks everyone for the comments and advice given...and I'm glad that I can ask questions. Currently I am in Toronto Pearsons Airport waiting to take the 15 hour flight that will land me the Middle Kingdom....I'm already dead tired (packing late last night) and I'm not in the country yet. I'll reply "proper" when I have landed on Chinese soil. Just hope I will have a working internet connection. Next time I post I will be in China...and behind the great firewall too. Until then... th_ag

Welcome Ganbare.

July is Nanjing quietest month for things to do. Most of the foreign students have headed home, the university teacher crowd normally take this opportunity to take a holiday or get a summer camp job in the countryside and many of the expat families try to escape the heat(35 degrees at the moment).

However, check out Ellen's Bar (Guangzhou rd), Secco Bar (near the main gate at Xuanwu lake) or Shanghai lu area (Talking 1,2,3,5 bars, Blue Sky, 61 House, Jimmy's etc).

Let me know if u need any help meeting new people.
