Look into negotiating a "housing allowance". In many cases help for housing is exempt from their salary ceilings. Plus this would enable you to live off campus which, trust me, you want.
Remember also that uni gigs have mondo holiday time, PAID, and that if money is your priority, there are always summer/winter vacation temp gigs out there.

Again, I know this is an old thread...but I have experience in the area and have worked in/will work again in Yangshuo.
Id say forget the 10,000 per month...the wages discussed above are much more like it. I have found living there to be cheap ... I havent spent much time in Chinese cities, but in 2010 in Yangshuo you could go to an expat type bar and drink a beer for 7 RMB. Training schools often offer subsidised or free meals, so daily living expenses can be low. Its not a place to save though.
In fairness, I think its probably a lifestyle choice. I dont like cities (I dont like Guilin for a start as its too big), I will only teach adults, and I dont want to go somewhere where it snows!
Its not a popular opinion on forums....but I feel the aforementioned 45 RMB an hour to teach an age group I want, in a location I want, with a climate I am happy with, on a reasonable workload....is a far better deal than 145 RMB an hour with none of my preferred working conditions being met.
Ill also addd training schools in the areas generally (although not always) have adult students, daytime teaching hours and no weekend classes. I should also mention that in my limited experience, the opportunity for private lessons is greatly reduced....with so many foreigners either working or passing through in the area, and so many places (including bars) offering English corners, there are fewer people looking for private tutors generally.

And for all the Americans, the Buffalo Bar in Yangshuo has the best burgers I've ever had!

Yeah, Americans only....we find if we restrict their movements and confine the Americans to just one or two restaurants it makes life easier for the rest of us

Haha that wasn't my intention. Just saying that its that one food I think all Americans look for when they're tired of Chinese food. Kind of like an Aussie seeing vegemite on the menu.

That suckss... we had some good foosball competitions in there. Yangshuo was a lot more touristy than I was expecting but still an awesome place for a vacation! Good mountain biking, hiking, boat rides and entertaining nightlife. And of course, the mountains!

You can swim right there in the river too in Yangshuo, which is pretty great since it is sweltering there in the summer. I've been obsessed with the idea of swimming these days though since Beijing is so hot and dry.
Sure Yangshuo is touristy but that's ok, it is a cool place to hang out. I don't know about living there long term -- it is really a tiny little town once you get past all the touristy stuff and I think the potential to go stir crazy and engage in unhealthy amounts of partying out of boredom would be rather large. I used to live in Kunming and we'd use places like Dali and Lijiang as weekend getaways (and they're actually farther from Kunming than Yangshuo is from Guilin). I think likewise I'd go for Guilin and escape to Yangshuo when I wanted to get out of the city and have the best of both worlds that way.

It suits me down to the ground. I dont like cities at all, and the idea of living in one holds zero appeal...Of course thats an individual thing, but I really want to be in a place where I can walk from one end of town to the other. If not walk, at least cycle within a short time.
Ive stayed/worked in only two places in China. Wenchang on Hainan Dao, and Yangshuo. Yangers wins hands down TBH. An advantage of the touristy thing is that the place probably has more English speakers per head than any other location in China IMO. Most restaurants have at least one English speaker, most also have an English menu. Geographically its tiny, but it still has bars and pubs, and so its quite comfortable as a place to live without the noise/bustle and sheer size of a city.
Wenchang in Hainan was bigger geographically, but had no English speakers outside of the college, no English menus in a restaurant, and didnt even have a bar ... Just KTV places. There wasnt/isnt much to do on Hainan either.
I cant imagine I would go to any other place in China TBH.
PS - If you look at the photo posted a few posts ago....my apartment was pretty much right in the middle of the buildings shown!
