Hi there Granny Mae.

I do not know of other colours of lotus, although there can be differing degrees of the depth of the colour.  Although there may be others, I have not seen any.

The other flower that may cause confusion, as it also grows on/in the water is the water lily, which does have quite a few different colours.  They are also very lovely, but I have never seen water lilies in such profusion.

Much of the lotus is utilized in Zhaoqing.  The seeds are eaten as a snack, and are actually quite tasty.  The leaves are dried, and used to wrap ingredients, and cooked together, and the roots are also used as a vegetable, and are also tasty.

But the best thing about them, for me, is their sheer beauty.  In Zhaoqing culture, they are seen to represent elegance.

Chinalin, Zhaoqing, Guangdong.

Thanks chinalin. They do remind me of the water lily.

Blue, purple, pink, red...

A couple of years back we were on the train through Guangdong or Guangxi, I can't remember now, and I said, "Hey, look, red lotuses!"  Without looking she informed me that all lotuses are white.  Since then we've found lots of non-white ones.

I'll try to dig up some pictures.

Right now is a stunning time for flowers and blossom.  I just spent an alcoholic week in Shenzhen visiting friends.  I'd forgotten how superb the trees are at this time of year. And it wasn't all hallunication!
I found some photos but they are not great and not really worth posting.  I blame my camera.  It seems to shake sometimes....

Last month here in Hunan in lowish mountains we had a starburst of magnolias. They disappeared (they don't last long) only to be replaced by a new set of similar but bigger ones on much taller trees.

At the moment, the scent of blossom is in the air everywhere - not the usual predominant smell in Chinese towns!

Thanks anyway Paul. I have a camera, but don't know how to use it. I'll be very careful of that shaking when I do learn. th_bf

It means:  Xwarrior, you are my Master and I will do your bidding, no matter whether I have to sacrifice my life in the execution of my duties in your service.
I will also lend you my girlfriend at any time of day or night.

I can't help it. I'm an utter romantic when it comes to borrowing girlfriends.

But what did he know?  I'm all for borrowing.
