English names for Chinese people
« on: April 06, 2011, 03:06:36 PM »
I have heard some real bad ones and have heard some good ones.

The absolute horrific name I have heard in 8 years:

My name is Worst.
Coolest name

Cappachina

I don't think having an English name is bad for Chinese people, in classes I make sure that they can address each other by their English names because it helps break down the barriers and fears of speaking to other chinese people in English. Thus, building confidence.

Some people will whine that this horse has long since passed away and needs no more beating, but this is one of my favorite topics for the Dead Horse Flog-O-MaticTM, Pat.Pend. and the fine art of equine necro-sadism. ahahahahah

The funny thing is that other people have complained that Chinese people only know each other by their Chinese names, so the English names aren't useful for hunting anyone down.  I've had the opposite problem.  My Chinese friends mostly only know each other by their English names, so they can't recognize each other's Chinese names.

When I did the English Monkey thing at a middle school, I had over 600 students.  Those only got called by numbers.  I wonder if this trend stuck.  I met a Chinese guy a couple of months ago who said his name was 33. mmmmmmmmmm

Three dead horses are not enough? Do we really need to beat a fourth one to death?

This is why you need a Dead Horse Flog-O-MaticTM, Pat.Pend..  It can easily beat a dozen horses to death and then will keep beating them all until the corpses are turned into a nutritious puree of dead horse flavored goodness.

I can't get my head around Chinese names, just too difficult. But most of my students love to pick their names. I would love to pick a chinese name but my chinese sucks too bad.

In another year I will rock a chinese name and then we are quitsies.

I did have a chinese nickname last year that was fun!
