Technology in China - for the people, by the people
« on: April 01, 2011, 04:01:48 PM »

Somehow, out of chaos, these guys produced good quality photocopies for 1 mao. That is, if you could find a way to drag their attention away from an online computer game they played all day, every day

I have seen these being used in shops - and once in a bank - but this guy was demonstrating an antique version to a potential customer from Hong Kong

The principal of using steam in cooking is not new - but this system scales the heights

OK ... a 3-wheeled motorbike is not a new idea but in Shaanxi they come fully enclosed as protection from cold in Winter and the heat of Summer.

Come complete with a sound system and a driver/rider who really does know all the streets in the downtown area.

If you are in the streets of Shaanxi, and hear an explosion just like a bomb going off, do not panic. It is just a popcorn maker.

The metal containers are super-heated and you know when the popcorn is ready when the thing explodes.

Traffic lights may be everywhere downtown - but these lights can go anywhere.

They are ubiquitous and ingenious. These guys and ladies specialise in mending shoes and cutting keys but I have got them to fix a some other things requiring small tools and ingenuity

Want your photos in a hurry? These guys are stationed in the street at the college gate.

It is just a matter of giving them your USB/MP../etc and telling them the size. Girls can get their wallet sized photos decorated with graphics.

Powered by a truck battery in a box under the table.

Location is everything. This guy is working in the middle of a very busy intersection.

I have seen lots of hats with fans before - but I did not realise they could be solar powered.

Underneath this hat is a very cool girl.

Great pics.  Whoever is selling those baozi (I guess that's what's in the steamers) is doing some seriously good trade it seems!
