Someone just mentioned in another thread coming to Shanghai for a year and I believe there are several of us in the city already, plus various others in nearby places.

Is anyone other than me interested in gathering for beer some evening?

Did you say BEER? Always interested in a gathering where there is cold beverages to be had. I just arrived in Shanghai last week and am still feeling my way around here but I am located in the Huangpu (sp??) area (subway line 4,8,9  nearby if that helps). As of yet have not had much time to explore to find a decent watering hole but am willing to try out new recommendations. alcoholic alcoholic alcoholic alcoholic alcoholic alcoholic

Could do!  I've been in SH since last summer.  Bit hectic at the moment though as we just started the new semester at my main job and my part-time thing means I work two or three weekends a month.  I'm not far from Shaanxi Nanlu subway station.

I'll have to keep you all in mind. I may have a short stopover in Shanghai this summer on my way to Xinjiang.

I would be interested. I'm getting there March 4th.

I will supposedly be in the Minhang district, although that may be subject to change. The first week will probably be hectic too.

Some weekend soon, for sure.    alcoholic

I would be interested for sure! I'm still a relative newbie to Shanghai and would love to check out someplace beyond the 3 bars I've been to here- and especially without feeling like I'm corrupting my innocent co-workers  Wink

When & where?

Anyone know a place that's reasonably central, sells beer at Chinese hole-in-the-wall prices (under 10 for large bottles), and has cold beer? That would probably be best, but I only know a few in my area and I'm nothing like central.

I know some decent Western places around Xu Jia Hui, but beer is 35 a pint or so.OK for me since I don't drink a lot and have a decent budget. Maybe not for others? Or someone has a better idea?

If we want a blowout, there's a good Mexican place (http://cantinaagave.com/) with an all-you-can-drink deal on margueritas for 95 rmb on weekend afternoons. With food, though, that's going to run close to 200 a head. Ouch, but I'd be up for it if it suits others.

Xujiahui would be an ideal location for me- I was browsing echinacities last week and thought that this place had a pretty good happy hour: http://www.echinacities.com/shanghai/listing/adobo-latin-flavor-201008240542.html

but- I have to admit the prospect of a Tequileria has definitely perked my interest. I can't really vouch for any good places to have a couple beers and chat from first hand experience- most of the places I've been are better for dancing Smiley. I don't get a chance to experience the hopping nightlife of downtown too often, living out in southern Minhang and all, so I'd be happy with either of your suggestions.

If Kid Presentable is arriving March 4th- maybe we could meet up the second weekend in March?

So what's going on then?  I saw the thread was bumped and it's just Kitano making fun of us...

physical meeting lol

Well, normally we meet online. I could have talked about meeting in "meatspace" rather than "cyberspace", but you'd have been laughing even harder and some people probably would have been seriously confused. (of course, some of us are anyway, but ...)

Using "physical meeting" for this situation -- a group who know each other online getting together in the real world -- goes back at least to the cypherpunks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cypherpunk) mailing list in the mid-90s. Anyway, that's the first place I saw it, though for all I know it is older. It just seems the normal term to me, though perhaps not to others.

I am going to do some scouting this week to see if I can find a place in the central area that looks like it will meet our general criteria. I am busy exploring the city now and have found a few options. Next weekend I will probably head of to Ningbo but will be available after that. But will let you know what I find.  alcoholic alcoholic

FWIW, SAFEA is holding their annual Job Fair in Shanghai on Saturday April 9th. That might be a good weekend to hold a Shanghai gathering.

I'm planning on attending either that one or the one in Beijing. If I make it to Shanghai, count me in for a beer or two or seven or eight   alcoholic
