For a few years now, you've been able to get the Wall Street Journal and the French and German equivalents in newsagents in even quite out-of-the-way places throughout the UK and the rest of Europe. Just recently, they've been joined by China Daily. This is new. Things are changing.

Then it is probaly easier to get in Europe than it is to get here in China.

Yes. While living in Guangdong I had no problem getting the China Daily - the small branches of China Post that have a magazine/newspaper section accept provide a subscription service.

In Zhaoqing, the Post Master held my papers and I would pick up a larg bundle every so often and on a rainy day sit down to some solid reading. In the early days China Daily was a 5 min read but now it is a pretty good newspaper.

For the past year I have been living in an area that has no great demand for anything in English and I have not found an easy way of getting China Daily.

It is not a major problem - I read the internet version. Apart from news it has opinion pieces etc. There is also a weekly Video News programme that I download for my classes - it is total crap (a Canadian female gets her money real easy for making it) but the students like it. Other videos, especially culture items, are interesting.

You can even download a Pdf version of the paper for free but I have not really explored that option. That is mainly because it has to be downloaded one page at a time. You have to register (free) to get access.

I will have another look at the Pdf version now that the holidays are here and I have the time. My main interest is getting to read the short items from around the provinces (North, South, East, West) - there you can find all the dumb things that can happen in this country.

Oh yeah, China is here now. Confirmed.

The WTO issuing bonds in Yuan, the recent development of certain military aircraft, Japan repositioning it's bases along the coast with China (instead of the Korean peninsula) and the large delegations of leaders and cabinets visiting Beijing for trade reasons clearly indicate that China is a power without doubt. And, for better or worse, they're getting bigger! Yikes??!

Just wondering if anyone else has been running into problems accessing China Daily???

The online version of China Daily has been giving me some problems over the last month:

1. using my Bookmark I get re-directed to 'www2. chinadaily.com.cn' and get an 'Oops' message from Google

2. clicking on the China site in Bing gets me re-directed to the USA version

3. downloading videos from the site used to be at lightning speed, but there are times now when a download cannot be completed

It is rather strange as I often use 'chinadaily' as a quick way of checking my internet connection if overseas sites are loading slowly - if 'chinadaily' loads in a blink I know my system is ok and it is just the GFW running interference.

Today, I had to try different links to get the 'cn' site. Problem was that it did not look quite right. You can check it out at:

Because I like to read newspapers and the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Financial Times are absent here. Besides, it's good reading practice for students.

Andale summer time so I can go home and read good newspapers all morning.

Aren't they online? I used to source intelligent but still comprehensible-for-second-language-learner articles from South China Morning Post and The Straits Times, and photocopy for my post grads. There were no issues with school admin over this, the students got a broader perspective on the world and were exposed to better journalism.
Anyway, I must admit I subscribed to Shanghai Daily. Newspapers and morning coffee belong together.

China Daily is pretty good for seeing what's going on in the country. Sure, I can get the Guardian on my kindle everyday, but sometimes I want to know what's relevant to my everyday life here. And the comment isn't always so censored and one-sided as you might think. And it's 1.5RMB.
