Links That Locals Use

Hey,

I see this as an appendix to the already excellent Link Page on this site.

So the idea for this thread is for the old China hands on this site to share the Chinese-language (or otherwise, it's all good  agagagagag) sites that they've found useful (or just fun), preferably something that all your Chinese mates know about, but that is less common among expats (most likely for language reasons).

(Raoul, if this thread takes off feel free to hack it up for parts)

I'll get the ball rolling with this Pop-up Chinese Dictionary, to help with reading Chinese-language pages. It's software that once downloaded will allow you to wave your cursor over Chinese text for instant translation.

Speaking of social networking, does anyone know how popular www.kaixin001.com is? Is it a "must-have" yet or secondary to renren and qq? I desperately want to land in China already cool.

Bumping this up because while it has been mentioned a few times in other threads, Amazon.cn   https://www.amazon.cn   is a great resource and deserves a spot here.

Last year Amazon.cn became linked to regular amazon.com, so that now pretty much all of the books you could buy on amazon.com are now available on amazon.cn. They are imported, so they take between 1-2 months to deliver, but the prices are generally better than your average English language bookstore, selection is much better (the only books you can't find are the banned ones and certain pre-orders) they deliver ALL over China, you can pay for the books using your Chinese debit card (provided you've got internet banking set up), and they often do promotions offering free delivery.

Beijing has some pretty good bookstores but I haven't even bothered with them since Amazon.cn started with the international books. This is a great resource for book starved expats!
