Spain 1-0 Holland in extra time. And no, I didn't stay up to watch it, so I won't know what to think of it until they start showing the replays on TV and on the bus here. From what I've read, though, the beautiful game went missing as a hockey team took on a diving team. Ah well, at least we have a new diving team champion.

It was a really great game, far more exciting than the final 1-0 score. I've never seen a match with so many yellow cards!
And that must be the two greatest goalkeeping efforts I have ever seen. This could easily have ended 4-3 but for the defensive contortions.
Congrats to Spain, who IMHO deserved to win.

Yours is the first positive review of the game I've read, Con. Maybe some people are too used to complaining? Or did you make a killing betting on the octopus? Whatever. Glad you liked it.

Con is canadian... Opinion do not count! The Karate Chop just got him converted That said, I liked the game as well and thought Spain did pretty darn well. Holland showed too much immaturity and their youth came through in the form of excessive tackling. The goal was clean.. no ifs/buts about it! I'm glad it's over and we can go back to regular party/sleep patterns.

I watched the game and was cheering for Holland at the start, i lived there for a year a long time ago. By the end i was really glad Spain won, i've also lived there. They just played the far better football and the Dutch really let themselves down with the way they played. I expected them to be more physical but that was a disgrace.

Can this be right? New Zealander named in 'World Cup Best XI.' ... but not one Englishman Somehow a player from the colonies has been named in a team of the best of the best. He played in a team that did not lose a game in the World Cup (and did not win any) and outranked Italy in its group. I would remain my normal humble self except over the last month I have had to read here about NZ being one of the 'crap' teams that did not deserve to be at the World Cup ... and how England is one of the top teams in the world that would show us how to play real football/soccer. Ryan Nelsen named in 'World Cup Best XI [[/size] All Whites skipper Ryan Nelsen has been named in a football "World Cup Best XI" picked by American sports television channel ESPN. Nelsen earned his place by "defending defiantly throughout the tournament and heroically against Italy", it said. Last month, international football website goal.com named Nelsen its world player of the week for "inspiring his side to two draws (against Slovakia and defending champions Italy) and giving the All Whites a shot at last 16 qualification". ESPN's Best 11 were: goalkeeper - Eduardo (Portugal), rightback - Philipp Lahm (Germany), centrebacks - Carles Puyol (Spain), Ryan Nelsen (New Zealand), leftback - Carlos Salcido (Mexico), midfield - Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany), Xavi (Spain), rightwing - Thomas Muller (Germany), attacking midfielder - Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands), leftwing - David Villa (Spain), striker - Diego Forlan (Uruguay). Substitutes: Justo Villar (Paraguay), Maxi Pereira (Uruguay), Lucio (Brazil), John Mensah (Ghana), Fabio Coentrao (Portugal), Mark van Bommel (Holland), Xabi Alonso (Spain), Arjen Robben (Netherlands), Mesut Ozil (Germany), Robinho (Brazil), Miroslav Klose (Germany).

Because we know how adept they are at soccer Yes ...... we do know! England 1-1 USA Given the media reception that the England team got on their return home how many English players would they have in a World Team? For The Guardian, "England is outfought and outdated in falling to worst World Cup defeat." It added: "England leaves the World Cup and should take up immediate residence in a museum of football history.

From what I've seen and read, Spain did deserve it. Yes, that's second hand, I certainly didn't stay up to watch, so don't worry about what I think. As Noles put it, its time to get back to normal sleep patterns, if I can ever figure out what those are.
England, stop yer blubberin' ferchrissakes, and start a youth/development program. Didn't work out too badly for the Germans.

Many of my Chinese friends ask me about my thoughts about team Italy. I tell them the difference between the French and the Italians was at least the French put up a fight. Now, they fought each other, but they fought. Italy didn't even break a sweat
