Brazil-Holland will be a good game. Shame to see Holland either of these teams knocked out this early.

Spain vs. Portugal tonight! They're neighbours- how can they possibly like each other?

A re-post from elsewhere (because here it's a wee bit more appropriate):
My view from the Dug-Out - having watched the match in a bar full of Brits, some Americans and a group of Germans.
Unbelievable - 4:1. I mean, if we'd have lost 3:2 or it would have stayed at 2:1 (or even then gone to penalties and we'd have still lost) then we'd have one hell of a case in which to argue that that goal should have been given. No doubt, we would have played far better if we'd have gone into Half Time with that scoreline. OK, so we were handed a massive injustice (corruption?). But being beaten by three clear goals destroys our argument that 'the game would have been different if that goal would have been allowed'. So, shameful, disgusting and I wonder 'what did I do wrong to be born an England supporter?'. It's like a curse. Should Capello stay? Probably not, far better under Sven (remember?). But the thing is, oddly, I like the guy and think he could win such a Cup as that under his style. Not sure why I believe that. We certainly played like Champions during the qualifying stages of the WC!! We mustn't forget that. But initial reaction of course is 'sack 'em all'... but on reflection, hmmmm.
At the end of the day, Germany were the better team and they won. So no injustice (except one disallowed goal). That's true. However, yes, things MIGHT have been different should that goal have been allowed. As I said, if we'd have not been beaten by such a degree, then we could flatly argue that we were the deserved champions and a travesty of sport had just been committed!
What is annoying is Beckenbaur's attitude. Now we do look like the 'stupid' team that he referred to last week. Grrr!
All this of course, stems from the fact we played like shite in a group that wasn't that tough. That is the underlying problem. We shouldn't have played Germany so soon (Franz was right there), as we should have topped our group. The poor, dire form we showed at the start of the tournament - well, players, managers? Who is to blame? Anyway, that should be the focus of analysis.
Anyway, there is my view... Germany deserved the win and we should reflect on why we played so crap in the early (easy) games. But why oh why is it always England. It'd be great to see Holland hoist the Cup this time! Bless 'em. I'll root for Spain now - seeing as I'm half Spanish I feel that gives me the right, but of course, not in the same (no way near) way as I'm an Englander!
Depressed - need more beers and the WC have lost some of it's flush for me now (get it???). But wouldn't it be great if Ghana won it!
The FA (Football Association of England) devised a plan to change the grass roots of the game about ten years ago, which was mooted in the end. The Germans however, took it up and look at them. As usual, we invent/innovate and then have our plans adopted elsewhere. Shoot the bally lot of the FA - fat, bloated, lager-louts! Oh wait - - - that describe me!
We watched the game in the same bar as many other England games - mostly Brits, some yanks (that was one hell of an atmosphere from the England v USA game - the chants and insults... all good fun!). Some Germans there too - but they were nice guys really.
Now to pick myself up and start finishing off the teaching for this term and fly to the UK.

Not sure if this aspect has come up in here before... Last week, on our SBS-TV (Australia) World Cup coverage, they always begin with their panel-of-experts commentary-team intro. They brought in a former English (Leeds U) player....he played back in the 1980s, (but sorry, can't recall his name).
Anyway, this chap bought in a currently-issued WC ball, and gave an extremely technical, and, persuasive, talk about how these tend to 'float' much more than the older balls. He explained that these just take so much longer for players to learn their new and different characteristics. Interesting point. Thoughts.....?

So, shameful, disgusting and I wonder 'what did I do wrong to be born an England supporter?'. It's like a curse.
Were you perchance born English? That might explain it. It could be worse. I had a friend years back who was a fairly passionate Stoke supporter. He did not get much joy from that. It'd be great to see Holland hoist the Cup this time! Bless 'em.
Indeed. If I had to bet, I'd say Argentina, but it is not a game I know much about. But wouldn't it be great if Ghana won it!
Better yet.

If you guys are interested, I've been posting some of my impressions from ground zero over at the Beijinger... I've been fortunate enough to catch a few games in Cape Town, Jo'burg and middle of nowhere! It's been interesting being deep in the underbelly of the beast http://www.thebeijinger.com/blog/Badr

Holland 2-1 Brasil My heart said Holland, my head said Brasil. Heart won this time, but it was a damn good game. England supporters, take note. This is how two world class teams play when each wants to be the best. Your're not that far off the mark, but you have work to do. Italy supporters, fuggedabowdit. France supporters, go back to the kitchen. Both of you. There's more world cup games to be played? Haven't the two best teams already shown us why they are the two best? Wouldn't it be a crime against football to let anyone else win it all?

What a match it was. I feel bad for Ghana not being able to win against Uruguay, but NED will flatten whoever they face in the semis. Tomorrow's GER/ARG will be an epic match. I'm very much looking forward to the semis.

Holy Ratshit, Batman
Brazil - gonzo
Argentina - gonzo
How the mighty are falling. In one pool I entered, we were to pick our final four. Me being such a brilliant prognosticator, picked Brazil, Argentina, Italy and Spain.
Go Spain you bastards! If you don't win it all now, I'll lose my 10kwai. I thought I knew a little something about world cup soccer, I suck this year.
So, who picked Uruguay, Netherlands, Germany and Paraguay or Spain? A Uruguay - Paraguay finals will finally prove which country is the most guay

Last night, I thought I was pretty much watching the final game, because Brasil were the favourites and Holland were a pretty stron dark horse team. (My own sentimental favourites, but that means nothing)And this morning, I thought that Holland was the new crown prince team. That this is their tournament to lose. Now I'm having second thoughts. Germany played as close to a perfect, complete game as you could ask for. 4-0 is a flattering score, but the result of that game was never in doubt. I'm still a Holland fan (gotta love their heart), and Spain cannot be discounted, but Germany looks like a machine. Whoever they play next had better not play scared.
