TV news here tonight has been showing us the US release (in SFO) of this new "eye" phone. Woo-hoo! And the quoted US prices appeared extremely affordable, too. When it finally turns-up down here, (July) our (Sherrif of Nottingham) gov't will have added so much more to the retail-cost here, darn them! I wanna go live in America!

Am considering buying an iPhone 4 here in the UK before coming to China, but wondered if anyone on the forums is using one/knows of someone who is using one. The iPhone 4 takes a mini SIM card...which (if any) of the mobile carriers in China offer a mini SIM?
If it's too big of a hassle, I'll just get a 3GS instead.

The SIM card is easily cut down. I use an iPad with a micro SIM and I just took a regular SIM card and cut it down to size. No problem. I would like to get an iPhone 4 but right now they are over 10,000 RMB unlocked.

Here's a youtube video tutorial + link for template download for how to cut your sim card down to fit the mini sim slot.

a 4G would get huge respect in the "Mine's bigger" sense here- big status symbol, cell phones in China are.

iPhone 4 will be released in Hong Kong on Friday. I imagine that will help to push the grey market price down on the mainland.

As soon as HK's demand is dealt with, it will pop up in Beijing for about 100RMB more than the HK list price.. that makes it quite appealing! I'm still enjoying my 3GS so no upgrade in my future anytime soon but I'm looking forward to the next generation.

I've found some excellent 3GS phones for sale here second hand, but the extra little bit of thinness makes me like the latest model. Since I probably won't know anyone in Beijing with an iPhone, facetime will mean very little to me (until I can use it to videoconference over iChat).

My brother's upgrading, so I'll come back to China with his 3G. Then I'll have to learn how to use it.

I just bought a "ZTE Racer", running the Android operating system. In comparison with my wife's iPhone it's a piece of garbage, BUT it does more or less everything an iPhone does, albeit in a less slick and intuitive way, and it cost a fifth the price.

Well, my jailbroken/unlocked iPhone (which worked fine in the UK; unlocked from Orange and used it on 3) doesn't like my China Mobile SIM…keep getting the "Different SIM detected" message when I turn it on. Is any sort of SIM supposed to work in these things, or is there a special one that you have to get?

Maybe you have to spring for an i-sim.

Had to install the "hacktivation patch"…now everything's working perfectly.
