Sounds like the little mofos at the world's worst middle school I spent one hellish year teaching at in Florida.

Ditto that EL. Only I did 3 years with special ed kids. The last year was really tough, as there was hardly any administration back up and the kids knew it. Nothing like being thrown to the wolves.  th_l

Rainbow Emily - totally. From my own 'far from fond' memories of my schooling years, the last thing I'd want to be, is a UK Comprehensive School teacher. There is a hell.

After reading this thread my half-baked idea of doing a PGCE at some point, and teaching high school kids in the UK has become a lot less appealing.

Kids can be vindictive, manipulative little sh*ts and I have a certain degree of sympathy for the teacher's position.

Nottingham, my 'hometown' has the highest crime rate in the UK. Higher than Belfast!

If only the Crown could appoint someone to be sheriff there, then this crime wave would end.  Yes, we definitely need a Sheriff of Nottingham.   th_ah

I am, naturally, opposed to hitting children...however, having taught at an elementary school in Europe and endured a PTA meeting, I am convinced that in most cases the ones responsible for the mayhem and rudeness which was a daily occurrence in class, were and are the parents. Caning parents should be not only legal but mandatory. as for this UK teacher, maybe people with a history of mental instability should not teach...that, however, would probably would deplete the teaching staff globally. you don’t have to be a raving bedlamite to teach children....you could do it because you think children are lovely, attentive and eager to learn...which is a whole other kind of crazy.

If only we could require people to take a test to get a breeding license - very much like a driver's license.

Question 1.  Your perfect little darling was give a 10 minute after school detention for trying to stab the teacher with a knife he brought to school from your home's kitchen.  What do you do?

a.  Blame the teacher.
b.  Blame the school.
c.  Blame the unjust society that denied your child the right to free expression.
d.  All of the above, plus demand the knife be polished and sharpened before being returned and that your child be compensated for the excessive and deeply traumatic punishment he got.
e.  Take responsibility for your child's behavior and take steps to make sure this doesn't ever happen again.

Further on from what I mentioned, I can't stress enough how horrific the discipline is in UK secondary schools. I mean, I literally get told to f**k off on a daily basis and pretty much talk to a wall. I get no support because it doesn't come from the higher people up top. I blame my stress levels on that. It's all down to the parents though, I mean when you have parents who are ex-druggies, current druggies, alcoholics amongst other dreadful things, you're fighting a losing battle.

Evidently the current one is not as effective as the one appointed by Prince John. th_k

Check back in a few months and there will be some more good lines here.
