I don't post here, but always read and laugh. Today I have been stitched up completely. I gave a month's notice that I must go home,I have a very small family. I have one brother, that's it, everyone else is dead.
My brother has cancer now, all through his body. Lungs, liver, spine, he is not expected to livelonger than a couple of months.
I gave notice at my Uni, private Uni. Every one was kind, to start with. Now it's the day I leave. My hugely reduced monthly salary has not appeared in my bank account. Sunday, not much I can do about anything except pack.
Not one person from the 'leadership' has answered my messages yet,so I will leave with very little as I had planned to stay a few more years and spent my money making my place feel and look good and comfortable. Given that all away now.
Beware Neusoft Institute of Technology in Nanhai Guangdong Province.
I am shattered as I won the teaching excellence award' last semester and I had to give my wee little dog away. I thought he and I would get old together. But no, just another China story huh?

Sorry that has happened to you at this time. It is par for the course in China and I would not take it personally ... umm, on second thoughts, take it personally and and do not forget the bastards for what they are ... but accept that it is often the way in China.
Stay strong for your brother. Remember our thoughts are with you at this hard time.

So sorry, Rattie, on both sides of your news... This seems to be a fairly common pattern in China, when the employer knows you're leaving the country. They know you have a set deadline, often a tight one, and they can drag their feet in that endearing and inimitable Chinese way while feeling sure that you won't be able to do squat about it once you're gone. You should spend your remaining time, if any, noisily raising hell with the administrators. Make a stink. Be loud and visible. Sometimes you can try things like not turning in your grades (although they probably just make those up anyway ) or school assets until you are paid...make it an exchange of hostages. At the very least, you should keep making noise on the internet. Plaster it everywhere you can! If they're a SAFEA school (which, being private, they're probably not), might contact them and see if you can get the money wired to you. Otherwise...sadly, the school is right. Once you're out of country you likely won't be able to do squat about it...

I'm sorry your reasons for leaving China are what they are. That's got to be hard to deal with.
As for the school, if there are other FTs there you might try telling the school that you'll be sure to tell the rest of the foreign staff about what they're doing and spread the word far and wide that this school can't be trusted. It isn't likely to do a lot of good, but if the school is desperate to keep the teachers it has they might be worried enough about what you might say to them to pay you your salary as hush money.
But mostly the others are right. When you're leaving the country the school knows there isn't a lot you can do once you're gone and that you're not likely to postpone your emergency flight back home over what amounts to a couple hundred dollars.
Good luck though, I hope that the school comes through and gives you your money.

I'm glad to see that your priorities are properly set even though theirs aren't. Before you know it, all you'll be thinking about is your brother and the school could go f#ck themselves for all you care

Like DD said, it boils down to priorities. I'm sorry to hear about your brother. At least you can take comfort in the knowledge that you are doing the right thing, regardless of how you former Chinese employer chooses to behave.

Hi Rattie. What the others have said. I'm sorry your school is treating you the way they are and I'm sorry you have to go home for such a heart wrenching situation. Try to focus on your brother during this difficult time.

Awful news, Rattie. The same thing happened to me a year and a half ago: a school chose to punish me for flying home to see my dying mother.
Keep the pressure on this swine. Hey, are you the only FT at the school?

It often seems to be matter of national pride. See any of Lee yang's "Crazy English " rhetoric about this, or in his recent, "Crazy Japanese" course rhetoric. Since there's not a substantial foreign population coming and going for all to participate in the nationalist act, they turn on themselves. If this was like Hong Kong: you'd see renewed national unification because it'd be a free wheeling, "fuck over a laowai" orgy. Overcharge them, bait and switch the real, working product wit ha shanzhai'd dummy once the purchase is over, deny them pay, lie to them, insult them every second but fail to see they understand what you're saying, pretending not to understand you when you speak their language, pay them less for more work than their peers at the job, and so on. That would be the true paradise for some local leaders. I'm sure they have baiju fueled dreams about this.

Hi Rattie
Make sure you slag off that employer on every possible website going. It may save another foreigner from being kicked in the bollox in the future! All da best to your brother mate.

In my anger at Rattie's plight I failed to express my sympathy to your brother, your family and to you. I am sorry to hear about this situation and feel bad about it.

Best of luck getting home. This is yet another reason that contracts should be enforced by firing squad.
