I forgot ... must be an age thing ... does one have to have a return ticket when entering China?  Or, can I fly in and then buy a return ticket when it is time to return?

You can fly in and buy return later.  My tickets these days are Xi'an return - so no outward flights.

You might get some flack when you try to board your plane, as you're supposed to show proof of onward travel if you're coming in on a tourist visa, which is what most people do. Just point out to them that you're going in on a work visa and not a tourist visa (if that's the case, and if you're not going in on a work visa, explaining the situation should be fine).

Depending on where you're coming from and who you're flying with, a return may be not a cent more expensive, or cheaper than a single. The return leg can typically be up to six months after the outward half.

We are going to be coming in on a Z-visa from Canada, returning to a position we held for two years.

If you are coming in on a Z-visa there should be no problems. It's a work visa, which becomes residence permit - so implies long-term stay.

I have never had to show return ticket coming in or out of China and I travel overseas at least once per year.

I came to China just over two years ago on a tourist visa. No letter, no return ticket, no nothing. No problem.

Now that was the winter of 2008 so rules and attitudes may differ now. But as LE said, you are on a perm res deal, so they'll know you're staying a spell

Thanks all.  You have confirmed what I had thought was the norm.  Now to make preparations.
