Any of the high nitrate content foods will do this to some extent. they can also give you really bad gas...

I've never questioned the healthy aspects of eating (or drinking) beets. What you Aussies do that is so, ummm, not right (trying to be PC here) is to put the darned things on hamburgers. The quote doesn't say anything about the health benefits of that little culinary quirk.

No, Ruth and Noodles are on the right track. Beets are perfectly acceptable as food...as long as you don't spoil a perfectly good hamburger with them.  I keep trying to tell you Australians...this beets-on-burgers thing will only serve to anger the gods. THIS IS WHY THE RAINS HAVE STOPPED.

...the inhabitants of the 'Borscht Belt' in southern Saskatchewan put beetroot on their burgers......they put it on/in everything....... ....some even still wear tin shoes too (I'm SERIOUS!!!)

And this may get me booted from the Saloon, but (and I posted this on the other beets on burgers thread), beetroot on burger is really good, especially pickled. Even to this American's palate. If you need an image, think of it as a grilled red onion. And Tim Tams for dessert after any meal.
