English teaching is a bit like prostitution,

A girl does not need to be particularly beautiful, passionate or skilled to be a hooker, just female and willing to do the work; in particular, to put up with all the bullshit that sort of work entails. Of course, for the best jobs, she does need those attributes.

Similarly, you don't need to be a native speaker or a genuinely fluent non-native, well educated, or a trained teacher for some jobs, just foreign and willing  to do the work; in particular, to put up with all the bullshit that sort of work entails. Of course, for the best jobs, you do need those attributes.

The typical recruiter, and quite a few school officials, also bear a startling resemblance to pimps. Details are left as an exercise.

I have the same gripe about allowing just anyone to vote. They should have to take (and pass) a comprehensive political test to be afforded the privilege.

And you have to be nice to the customers, make them feel good about what they're doing, otherwise they complain to the boss and you might lose your money.  You can't just let them handle most of the work on their own, for example.  You have to be there, encouraging, providing activities, smiling.  You're supposed to pay attention to your dress, too, wear something appropriate.

And there's a certain amount of shunning that goes with other people knowing you do that job.

FSO's, recruiters and pimps tell you what you want to hear, then pull the old bait and switch,trying to get you locked down before you notice the nasty underbelly.  The latter 2 like to be seen with you in public, and often get you to service their friends (and their families) for free.

Most of this applies to most jobs.  You show up for work, get F***ed by the bosses and/or customers, and do your best to smile and pretend you like it.

Very true. I been there and I do it everyday. Yeah fortunately, most of the students here find me " interesting" and " funny" but I the opposite from the inside. It's almost prostitution but I carry an " expert" book. Too much to write but everyone knows it. I got fired for not entertaining them. That was a uni with large classes. Training schools are comparatively better where it's easier to make them work. Some students just " not talk" at all. I wonder why they pay money to piss me and other foreigners( who want to impart knowledge). Get into the class smiling and greet them....... you see blank looks as if they never heard " how's it goin?" or "how you guys doin"....I have met the most good looking students with ZERO iq.   Not good for anything.
