Baring any unforseen circumstances, it appears that I'll be ready to head to China starting next semester. Most of the hiring for this semester is done and over with, I gather, and I am still waiting for my new passport, etc. so it isn't a consideration anyway. So, my questions are:
A.) Have any of you saloonatics started Uni positions in the middle of a year?
B.) Did you find the pickings slimmer given the fact that the majority of hiring seems to happen right before the summer (i. e. now)?
C.) I'm guessing that the best time to approach potential employers for the Feb/March semester is around December. Am I off, or is that guess correct?

Not every position gets filled, Moon. Start enquiring whenever you're ready. We can help sort the sheep from the goats if need be.

Hi MOP - I know that it happens at my uni and several others here in ChangZhou. I already know that one position will be open (at this point) as there is no way that they will renew the contract for one foreigner who has a contract until the end of the first semester next year.

My contracts are from January to January and when I came over I had no problems with offers for that period. Many universities accept people for 6 month contracts, and so are happy to hire in the middle of the year.

My Uni hires for second term. We have several teachers that were hired to start second term and were given a 1 year contract. Some may not be renewing as they only wanted to come for 1 year. Only caveat is you need a Master's.

Remember, Parma, there may be few jobs left come September, but schools are desperate to fill them.

Bear in mind that unis are generally pretty rigid in terms of time periods...they will hire almost all their teachers to coincide with set term schedules. If you see a uni hiring in the middle of a semester, it's an emergency replacement of a teacher that got sick, got scared off, got mistreated, etc...and these openings tend to be few and far between.
The only schools that are just wide-open in terms of hiring times are the private schools/training centers.

Thanks for the feedback. I am thinking more around the winter break - if university openings are slim pickings compared to the summer hiring period.

I've started 2 out of 2 jobs at the end of winter, and didn't have any trouble finding either. Most Australians and NZers come from a Jan to Dec school cycle, so starting in Feb fits in there. You shouldn't have a problem.
