"Be specific if you order the mushrooms!"

« on: June 09, 2007, 01:31:57 PM »

I was at a wild party technical symposium last weekend when someone asked a simple, innocent question.

One that left everyone in stunned silence for quite some time.

I think all who'd heard it were disturbed because they thought this phenomenon was "just themselves". Or that they were only imagining it. Or that time really does just fly when you're having fun. But the bottom line was that ALL of the long-term Western expats had to answer this question "YES". I know I did.

But I can't for the life of me imagine why this happens.

OK, here's the question: "Do you find that your fingernails and toenails grow MUCH faster since you started living in China?"

Mine grow like crazy. I go through nail trimmers like I never imagined possible. I always thought the trimmers here were just cheap and shoddily-made.
Now I'm not so sure.  th_ao

Nail growing faster is definitely true.  Stronger - no I think mine are about the same strength.

How about ear wax.  Never had any to speak of in Canada.  I have tons here, have to clean daily.

Ok if this is your idea of a mondo bizarro question, what's your idea of a normal simple question?

Not the question itself...the effect it seems to have on people. This seems to be something a lot of expats kinda notice, but never really articulate until they hear the question.

Hmmm you may have something here.

I noticed my nails grow quickly just before I left.

Yes.  And I have much more body hair now than before too.  Very odd.

Hair and nails are made of the same substance.  However, in nails, the "strands" are fused together, in a side-by-side fashion.  (Look closely at them and see what I mean).  So, if you have fine hair, you have thinner nails.....Thick hair = stronger nails.

Ok, I understand now.  I have very fine hair.  Hence my weak, easily torn nails.  th_ag

Missi...are you a brunette?  Brunette hair (even when fine) can be much more plentiful than blondes or redheads.  Anyway....the hair/nail thing is just a rule of thumb.

Longer and definitely stronger, or it could simply be because my hands aren't in dishwater here as often as they were back home, therefore less susceptible to damage.

I think Kcannuk's got a point...here we tend to lead more of a life of leisure so nails grow more quickly.

But that doesn't explain why my boobs have gotten bigger th_m th_o
