AVG
« on: April 18, 2009, 02:22:24 AM »
I had my computer system wiped and a legal copy of Windows installed.  The virus program I purchased, Kaspersky 2009, created a corupt file on C drive preventing me from doing a defrag.

I deleted Kaspersky and can do a defrag with no problem.

I installed AVG and my computer is now slower than molasses in January running uphill.  It takes forever for a page to open, if it does.

Suggestions mmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmm

Wow, DS, you've had the worst time of things with computers...
I've used the AVG free version for many years- both at home and in China- and had outstanding results with ZERO problems.

Are you still running Kaspersky or any other virus scanner? Sometimes trying to run more than one can cause things to slow way down. Or perhaps you're running something else that stays resident and is competing with AVG for resources...

Otherwise, there may be some kind of voodoo happening with your university network firewall; these turn out to be the source of many computer mysteries.

Sorry, I know nothing helpful - but that is quite a nice expression. Not one I have heard before.

DS,

go to http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/ and download a program called TuneUp. That thing is a life saver in many ways. The trial version last for 1 month but you usually see results after the first time. Run their 1-click maintenance

Latest AVG?  With the godawful Link Scanner?

Disable the Link Scanner.

(I don't know how.  I do use AVG 8.5, but installed it without the Link Scanner because it was such an irritant in an earlier installation.)

I use Norton but my friend's hubby says McAffe is better.

This thread is about a problem with AVG, though.

I have the 8.5.  Today when I got home, when I opened my computer I had a message saying that I had a pirated copy of AVG and had to buy a registered one.  I have clicked  on update to see if that fixed the problem.  I did install AVG free from the internet so in theory it should not be a pirated copy but then TIFC.  llllllllll

Raoul, no I deleted Kaspersky from my computer.  I did send the company a message and a copy of the 'print-page) showing the corrupt file in my computer.  So far they haven't replied, but then it is a weekend.

After checking, it wasn't the free version so I removed it and attempted to download the free one.  It was totally unsuccessful after 2+ hours I reinstalled the Rising Antivirus that the tech had left for me to use should I need it.  I needed some sort of antivirus protection. llllllllll llllllllll llllllllll llllllllll llllllllll llllllllll

Zonealarm for such viruses and whatnot as will make use of your internet connection.
Re-booting to Safe Mode from which to run your choice of bug catcher.
The NoScript add-on for Firefox for stopping websites running stuff without you knowing it.

And with all that in place (and the relevant learning curves ridden like a rollercoaster) it's fairly hard (he says hopefully) to get virii without actively downloading and using infected files.

Have you been at the porn again?

(Does the Kaspersky always create a corrupt file?  You might be able to use it again just by deleting the file.)

I've encountered similar issues with AVG in recent years regarding resource usage. You may want to do some research regarding AV software effectiveness and resource usage.

The lag is likely caused by some rogue third-party software preventing AVG from running properly.

Plenty of sources out there that don't really fit the topic. Trying a search for "tweaking AVG" on Google is a good place to start.

I love AVG but it does have a tendency to go haywire for no reason or whatsoever then be back to working fine later.
http://freebies.about.com/od/securityfreebies/tp/best-antivirus.htm
I usually alternate between using it and using avast or avira (both free as well) for the office computers... I found doing that easier and more time efficient than trying to troubleshoot the bugger.

so as soon as AVG starts acting up, I uninstall it and install the latest version of avast. Then, about a week or two later, I reinstall it.
A good question would be "why don't i just stick with avast if it's that good?" I just had a bad experience with it back in the old days and I am still reluctant to trust it 100% AVG is pissing me enough to look into it again.
Avira is the best of the bunch IMHO but their update server is frequently unaccessible from the mainland.
