It's getting worse and worse these days at home. There seems to be factories and companies shutting their doors for good everyday. So many people are out of work and looking for any job they can get. Do you think that some of these people will head overseas to China to find a job? Are any of you noticing more teachers than usual coming in?

well its certainly a driving factor in me coming back out there. there is next to nothing for grad students here and not even much in the way of normal work like retail, hotel bar, and call centres. English teaching in china until it sorts it self out sounds like a plan

Compared to last year I would say there are less Expats here in Suzhou. I dont think that China crosses that many people minds when they are looking for work. Lots of schools still need teachers here.

People who have been here, returned home and can't find work there are certainly returning. I know of several. So my guess is that yes, there will be a movement overseas, but not necessarily to China. I would guess places like Korea, Japan and those that pay better than here will be seeing more applications. People who have loans to pay off are or other financial obligations don't have China as their first choice!
But there will be a flow on to China. Which in turn will have an effect on pay and conditions offered, and increasing requirements for degrees and experience.
HOWEVER ... those being affected most at home are in general fellas in the 'masculine' areas of work - mining, heavy manufacturing etc. These people also don't have the quals to come or often the desire to teach. Engineers, designers etc are also being hit, and may be more interested in coming.
Service jobs are actually increasing marginally - and these are more female oriented. So there seems to be a shift in gender in the job market.

More like "exceptional". It's really, really hard to get airfare paid in advance! Says much about you...

As others said, I don't think China will be westerners' first choice. I have spoken to other Brits about China. The reaction I generally get is "Oh, I refuse to go there. Look at their H' r'ghts record or what they did to T." They are unaware that the Uk has done/is doing much worse.

Who can afford the airfare to get there? Parents or whatever savings they have - given that most contracts state airfare reimbursement, so they figure they will get it back. Relatively small outlay for a guaranteed job for 12 months. I would guess the majority won't come without a job lined up first.

My university with reimburse for the round trip ticket as soon as you arrive. They also pay for tickets for you as well if you don't have funds.

Most people don't have a clue about China. I have been here six years, I can't afford to go back home for work. There is none. Plus, I can make more here. With a valid visa and good skills you can do very well. Cheers to all. First post from Worldtour.

I am not in China yet ... In the middle of applying for Uni jobs for September but the economic situation here (Australia) was a factor for me making the decision to look at going back overeas to teach. I have had 2 stints in Korea in the last couple of years and don't really want to go back there to work ... I had personally written off China as a possibility for me ... I think mainly on money grounds .. but research in the last few weeks has shown me that even on the normal low level pay for University jobs I am actually better off teaching in China than being unemployed here ... and I realised that I could afford this as an option ... One of the biggest shocks to my system coming back to Australia from Seoul a couple of months ago was how much more everything seems to cost.

Welcome aboard Teacheruas?? Hmmmmmm. That doesn't seem to sit right. Should it be "TeacherAUS?? Oh no! Not another dixlecksik member! oooooh, sometimes I kill myself!! There is a good reason this place exists....we are all happy in China! Some of us make more money than others..Who cares? Research has shown me that China is a far better place than Korea. Cost of things in Australia has me worried, as I will be going back for a month, this summer. Booze and ciggies? My goodness me!!
