Note that Gmail supports secure web connections, Just go to "settings" and click "always use https". This encrypts all your connections so no-one between you and Google can read anything.
I advise everyone to use this. Anyone using a mail service that does not support it should consider switching to one, like gmail, that does.
There are several names for this service. Netscape, who invented it, called it SSL, secure sockets layer. For some reason, when the IETF made it a standard, they called it TLS, transport layer security. The actual protocol is HTTPS, secure HTTP. You should see https:// up in the URL display whenever it is used, and some browsers show a padlock icon for security. Same service no matter which name is used.
