Suzhou's Annual Harvest of the Tasteless Plant Matter Balls
« on: October 03, 2008, 08:00:43 PM »
I snagged these shots of a group working together to shuck and sell this year's harvest of a popular local vegetable that's used to make a beloved seasonal soup. Note the communal mountain of these rascals in the background of both photos. They are camped at the entrance to a tiny but writhing little market alley that snakes away along one of the nearby canals.

I have no idea what they call these little whitish balls harvested from local water plants. They are used to make a very popular soup whose name I also don't know, which should tell you much about its palatability. In the timeless classic Suzhou tradition of pointless, flavorless cuisine, the soup strongly resembles slightly goopy hot water with absolutely tasteless balls of alien plant matter floating in it.

At least the crew has some local flavor...

Hey, such fashion savvy doesn't come along every day...

Anyway, nope...not much like water chestnuts (which they also do here)...
