Hatsune Miku - Ievan Polkka. It's apparently a whole meme now in China: a Japanese vocaloid covers the scat section of a modern rendition of a traditional Finnish polka that emphasizes agricultural themes, and you make a video of your colleagues, classmates, workmates doing the dance. With leeks. But these vocaloid things are cool. Speech synthesis is apparently much easier for Japanese than it is for English, thus the Miku products. They morphed into metal too, where they're called Hagane Miku. Hagane Miku - Corpse Attack

GUMI- Poker FaceGUMI (not GAGA) is another one of those vocaloids, and I don't know who produced Poker Face. It's a cute and very addictive pop tune (and not a cover of Lady Gaga though metaphysically they do share some concepts). There's a whole MMD scene over on Nico Nico Douga that makes up seems like hundreds of different videos for this one song too. Possibly there's something similar going on on Youku too but I haven't looked yet.

Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. So much for cute and addictive pop.

Cute! For Science! Vocaloid, voice synthesis for music, is technically much easier for Japanese than English (I think I was reading there's like an order of magnitude difference between the number of discrete sounds or the number of discrete changes between sounds or something), so while English speech synthesis still sounds shit, and even japanese doesn't sound completely right, still they're making arguably (a lot of awful, awful pop, but also) some cool tunes. And it seems to be social media-type communities doing it. I mean, for god's sake, they gave us DANCEROID!!!!111!!!eleven. That Danceroid video is the archetype for hundreds of MMD copies using the software characters for the vocaloids... and their pantsu!!! And Danceroid r awesome. woooooo! \o/

Calach, my old friend, I think your brain has curdled from too much octopus porn. That stuff sounds a bit like Hello Kitty being fed through an old LP-record-factory stamping-and-seizing module, only not as cool.

Pleh, can't find Ha gane Miku on Youku. Corpse Attack is very cathartic. I think it is probably true to say I have musical enthusiasms rather than taste per se. But, to quote Hagane Miku, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!

Genesis's The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I didn't like this album when I first heard it. But then I played it about ten times in a row while driving across the US, and now I think it's pure genius. Could the hypnotic effect of the white stripes have had anything to do with it?
