Title: How To Develop Chinese in Beijing?
Post by: Ivyman on December 04, 2017, 03:59:04 AM
Hi Everyone,

I'm currently in Beijing.  My Chinese is still basically zero.

I want a consistent, but low load, program that I can learn for 1-2 hours a day, either five days a week or seven days a week.

I am so bad and slow at Chinese, I just want to focus consistently, but keep the intensity lighter than normal.  A 6 hour a day program would kill me.

Can you recommend any companies, private tutoring, books, etc.?  I always learn better with a tutor than a classroom, but am willing to try anything.

Ask a Chinese teacher (at your school/college), who has "spare" time, to help you become more proficient.

The usual method is to date someone local who speaks some English.  This almost inevitably does nothing more than turn you into a full time English tutor for your date.

The alternative is to date someone who's English ends at "Hello, how are you?".  Your new friend will still come out ahead in the language exchange, but you'll inevitably end up learning at least some Chinese.

Wish I'd realized this when I came to China. ananananan

Pay for it - all up front. 2 hours a day, M-F, for the next month.

That way you will be guilted into it.

Just about all books are good.

Get Pleco, buy the flashcard app. If you encounter a new useful word, add it to your library. Review those card everyday. Don't break the chain.

No shortcuts.

Unless I wanted a visa, I'd never pay for one of those. Better off paying a local 500 RMB or so per week for ~10 hours of 1:1, or two different ones if you are unsure what you want out of a tutor. Otherwise you'll get held back by dumb dumbs or get left in the dust by the talented. Gotta get that personalized feedback.

I highly recommend culture yard. They have great teachers and also better curriculums that are tailored for adults, not children.

Many class options including small groups, 1-1 etc..

The rates are also quite affordable
