Title: Technology in China - for the people, by the people
Post by: xwarrior on April 02, 2011, 06:01:48 AM

Somehow, out of chaos, these guys produced good quality photocopies for 1 mao. That is, if you could find a way to drag their attention away from an online computer game they played all day, every day

I have seen these being used in shops - and once in a bank - but this guy was demonstrating an antique version to a potential customer from Hong Kong

The principal of using steam in cooking is not new - but this system scales the heights

OK ... a 3-wheeled motorbike is not a new idea but in Shaanxi they come fully enclosed as protection from cold in Winter and the heat of Summer.

Come complete with a sound system and a driver/rider who really does know all the streets in the downtown area.

If you are in the streets of Shaanxi, and hear an explosion just like a bomb going off, do not panic. It is just a popcorn maker.

The metal containers are super-heated and you know when the popcorn is ready when the thing explodes.

Traffic lights may be everywhere downtown - but these lights can go anywhere.

They are ubiquitous and ingenious. These guys and ladies specialise in mending shoes and cutting keys but I have got them to fix a some other things requiring small tools and ingenuity

Want your photos in a hurry? These guys are stationed in the street at the college gate.

It is just a matter of giving them your USB/MP../etc and telling them the size. Girls can get their wallet sized photos decorated with graphics.

Powered by a truck battery in a box under the table.

Location is everything. This guy is working in the middle of a very busy intersection.

I have seen lots of hats with fans before - but I did not realise they could be solar powered.

Underneath this hat is a very cool girl.

Yes to everything. A new restaurant rising in the village of Shi Pai(Guangdong, Zhaoqing). Near to the one you remember so well.
It was roofed over and as far as I know the pole is still there.

I came across it when transferring photos from my old computer.

Question 3.

Although it was categorised as a 'toy' the name on one of the objects in the photo is very familiar to those males, of British descent, who had an interest in the 'nuts and bolts' of life in their boyhood.

* I apologise for the quality of the photo. I was focussing on something else  ababababab and only noticed the target later on. You are going to have to zoom in. Maybe, to save you going blind, I will blow it up (the photo that is  xxxxxxxxxx) and post tomorrow.

** This object may be a mystery for those from the USA. Instead, you can use the time to gaze in awe at the product with the Stars and Stripes.

DISCLAIMER: I am not! I came out of the toilet next to this shop and the middle-aged lady who owns the shop was standing outside. We started chatting and she invited me in for a cup of tea.
If I am in the city I call in to see her ... and have a cup of tea while we discuss the various merits of her products.
:wtf: I now know which products are most popular with female clients ... but my lips are sealed.   uuuuuuuuuu

Toys that all boys want.

You'll have more fun with Meccano.

Years of fun in every oufit.

Did they have a single advertising slogan that wasn't insidiously sexual.

I was so naieve.

Just Like Mr Benn to get it right! Now I will have to return to the shop to see if they have a suitable prize.

My Meccano set was great when I was a kid ... and now I want a set like this one.

This enlargement is of shocking quality but there is enough detail to give an idea of the hours of fun a young boy can have in assembling its components.

Technology in China - Test for Advanced Students

Question 4.

This is Bus 17 heading to my college - there are only 35 stops to go.

While making a left turn the driver is playing a one-note version of the Post Horn Gallop on the horn, as required by law in China.

Where is the button for the horn on Bus 17?

Post by: chinalin on June 16, 2011, 04:04:34 PM
I would presume that there is no button for the horn at all, on bus # 17.  Instead I would expect that the horn starts to toot automatically, when the ignition is switched on, and continues to toot randomly, regardless of traffic conditions!!

On the gear shift.

dragonsaver got it right in one. agagagagag

Bus#17 started life, like any other bus of its vintage, with the button for its horn mounted on the dash - you can see 4 buttons on the ledge beneath the speedo.

To sound the horn the driver has to lean forward and extend his right hand to make contact.

The company that runs Bus#17 has come up with a brilliant solution -  they have taped the button to the front of the gear shift/lever. The driver can steer, change gear and sound the horn at the same time. And he can do all this without moving his body.

I would expect that the horn starts to toot automatically, when the ignition is switched on, and continues to toot randomly, regardless of traffic conditions!!

They may well be working right now on a plan to do this.  mmmmmmmmmm I guess it is possible that drivers of Bus#17 are not pressing the button to sound the horn - they only press it to stop the random tootling.  bfbfbfbfbf

one of the foot pedels
If they put one on all 3 pedals - and they played different notes - it might make for an entertaining ride.  agagagagag

If he was blowing the horn with his foot, he couldn't step on the gas or brake,in order to move or stop quickly as required by the time warp continuum in China.  bjbjbjbjbj

Piglet was the only one to come up with an answer for Question 5.  bfbfbfbfbf

Not sure if I can say that 'cooking oil' is the right answer. The cheap cooking oil in China has been recycled so many times that I doubt it has any bang left in it.

Maybe we need an easier question. Try this one:

Yes! Give the man a chocolate fish!

The player was putting out a big sound down a back lane in the village. The owner, who was nowhere to be seen, may well have been studying IELTS but I think it is more likely he was in restaurant, a block away, drinking baiju while listening to the music.
