Title: Aershan
Post by: Vegemite on June 17, 2007, 12:12:58 AM
All of us laowei up here had a trip out to Aershan last weekend. Aershan is a volcanic region about four hours south of Hailaer and straddles the Mongol / Nei Mongol border, it's famous for (supposedly) having the third highest Heavenly Lake in China...but it wasn't that high up. For us though, coming from the flat grassland area of northern Nei Mongol, it was good to see some hills and green trees.
It was also great just to get out and socialise with all the other laowei here, to do lots of drinking and eating...I just wish that the school had organised this sort of thing at the start of the school year or semester, rather than at the end...it's a good way to get to know each other. With the language barrier it's usually just a greeting of each other in the street...I'm sure if we'd had this sort of trip, when I'd first come, those language barriers would have been easier to break. As it is, there's only one of the Russian teachers that I pop in and occasionally visit.

So here are some pics...
This was our first roadside loo stop...the sky's that colour 'cos there's a sand storm brewing.

Here's another view from the back of the bus, the sky's clearer here...

But in this one the sky's dark again,

And this was the last bus stop on the way home...there it was really sandy...

As for Aershan itself, this was my favourite place - Rose Mountain. It wasn't really a mountain, rather a large rock formation.

Nestled at the foot of Rose Mountain was a typical little Russian type village, relatively common up in this part of China.

And so here are some views as we climbed Rose Mountain...

One of our little side trips was going to the Mongolian border and crossing over into the 'no-man' area between the two countries. I found it interesting that we were allowed to take photos of the Chinese border guard...even a close-up when he was on the bus with his gun. But anyways, here's some pics of the border and the area between the two countries:

On the Sunday they took us up to Heavenly Lake, which involved a very long, bumpy bus ride and then climbing thousands of steps to look at the crater lake.

One of the other highlights for me was seeing the herds of camels on the side of the road...

Great shots Vege... If you ever get the chance you should check out Wudalienchi. A volcanic rock park. It also has the thousands of steps and great views from the top.
