I stumbled across this very, very informative site on Xinjiang written and maintained daily by a young foreign couple living, I think, in Urumqui. I just want to share it with you all:

It is an interesting site - and I liked one of the ads it linked to. Didn't check the ad - just thought the headline was appropriate!
Crushers In China
High Quality Crushers From China 22 Years Experience.

big ups to those guys, they were extremely helpful 2 years ago when i went on my Xinjiang trek and answered tons of questions. I'm hoping that sooner or later, they'll be back to regular blogging once the situation there is normalized

Not one answer from the messages I sent to my friends, so mobile phones are still very limited. None of them live in the capital - all in smaller more wee ger dominated places.

I found that blog about a year ago. I like it and check it fairly often.

as far as I know it goes like this:
international calls are ok, very limited internet access (to Xinhua sites etc)and a limit of 20 text messages per day.
LE: perhaps your friends had passed their text limit, or were saving them? Let me know if you get any updates, I'm very keen to know what's going on in there.

One reply back, but my return has not been answered.

I'm pretty sure you can phone them from within China with no hassle. (Could do all along)
As it stands it's just the internet that's off and the text limit.
Here's hoping that the rumors about the connection being switched back on for Spring Festival are true.
