I am listening to all sorts of stuff now that i can get Limewire to work at school. Went out with students to buy a mp san on Saturday and i have been kicking my self for not buying one ages ago. It's nice being able to block out China when ever i want.:)
Most of my stuff is fairly contempory, i like Green Day, Limp Bizcuit and stuff like that but also Elton John, the Beatles, Meatloaf....pretty much anything. From Beethoven to the Queens of the Stone Age it is on my player. Not sure what else to add though still have about 300mb left. 10.5 hrs of music so far.

Peculiar, I know, but I don't have an MP3, or whatever. The only time I listen to music is when I am cooking. I would hate to plug myself into a player when I am on a train/bus, whatever. I read and sleep!

I just bought some logitech mini speakers for my laptop that plug into a USB port. I am listening to Sara Evans. Great sound. I don't have an MP3 player, when travelling I play cards, read a book or grab a few winks.

I never use my MP3 for music, just for lesson stuff.
I listen to my downloads on my puter, just downloaded a new album by Pink Martini, oldies, jazzy sounding stuff, very smooooooth.

I'm not really a jazz person either...but I just listened to the album in full and it;'s got some Latin sounds, some French, some stuff that sounds like it came outta the 40s...all sung by this woman with one of those cigarette smokey voices, very good. I'm now downloading an older release I liked the new one that much.

Been listening to a lot of Chinese rock lately. Came back from the last Midi Festival with butloads of CDS and DVDS. Suffocated,The Subs and Su Yang to name a few.The latter is a really good folk/rock singer from Ninxia backed by a rocking band. Subs are old school punk rock while Suffocated is a furious death metal band.
Currently listening to CCR's classic "Willy and the Poor Boys" album.

Currently, I seem to be hooked on country. Found this radio station online, which broadcasts from Calgary. Shane Yellowbird's "Me and my old pick-up truck" is my favourite so far. Contains the best pick-up line ever, "Baby, are you from Tennessee, cause you're the only ten I see". So funny.

I've always had a soft spot for Willie Nelson...worked as a country music radio broadcaster for five years but must admit the country music of late has been a bit too mainstream. The Dixie Chicks have been one of the better things that has happened to country in this decade.

Met her back in the day. Lush played in Toronto at a small venue called The Opera House. They were part of a six band show and they went on first. After they just hung at at the bar to listen to the other acts. Nobody knew who they were then. The whole band were good people. Friendly, chatty, nice bunch and yes she is fiiiiine.

I have been listening to a superb band called the Black Heart Procession, whose recent album, the Spell, is like a cross between Afghan Whigs, God Machine and Arcade Fire. I can't recommend it highly enough.

The BoM singer is quite something, isn't she? Incredible vocal range. Her 'normal' band is a punkier outfit called Made Out of babies. They are a bit like a female Jesus Lizard. I can upload theirs too if you like. battle of mice is a supergroup containing members of several 'post-metal' bands...

There's a great French Canadian singer named Garou, beautiful, smoky bar kind of voice. I listen to quite a bit of French stuff, Francis Cabrel, Patrick Bruel and even Edith Piaff. There's a Cajun singer named Zachary Richard who's pretty great, too.

War protest songs as a follow up from my war poetry Literature class last week. I gave them Eric Bogle's "No Man's land" and they all loved it, and asked for the music. So this week they are also getting "And the band Played Waltzing Matilda" "I was only 19", "Unknown Soldier" "Where have all the flowers gone".

I don't normally listen to music as I travel. I find it isolating, distracting and further I am one of those horrid people who hum, sing snatches of songs (totally out of tune) and jiggle around in time if I am listening to music. If others can't hear and share - then they are driven nuts.
So in all I am happier to talk, read, play cards, look out of the window and muse on life as I travel.
Music is an 'at home' or in the clubs thing for me because I becomes totally caught up in it.

I miss my Oink account so much (ratio also not good enough for invites)! I don't have internet at home here in China, so I made friends make me going away CDs before I left. I have those on constant rotation.
Right now listening also to Feist's new album, Postal Service, random Pendulum, and lots of Zero 7.

I was having this conversation with my friend who has a new mobile phone, all the bells and whistles which is touched something in error, its now in Indonesian and she can't work out how to get back to English. She's a lawyer and hasn't had time to get back to the store to have it fixed. My mobile is about 13 years old, in black and white. Will do everything I want it to - phone and text. Has been very faithful and worked brilliantly all the time I've had it. I only wish it had an mp3 on it now....

I have a fast ska cover of Everybody Knows by Leonard Coen stuck in my head. It won't leave because a) the arrangement is totally inappropriate to the song, and b) I know all the words.
It did replace a much worse song. I can't remember what it was, and won't try, lest it pop back in. I was ready to extract it with a cinder block. llllllllll

Check out Gyroscope, Placebo and Rage against the Machine. Played at the BIG DAY OUT this year, brillian. Gyroscope are a great Western Australian band. Also for some more Aussie bands check out Little Birdie, Missy Higgins, John Butler Trio, Eskimo Joe, Grinspoon, Regurgitator, SilverChair (their old stuff), The Whitlams, and Wolfmother.

Amos Lee, he's amazing, soul,blues,jazzy kinda stuff...found him on a soundtrack to a movie with Norah Jones called My Blueberry Nights...chick flick but lots of cool music. Anyway, Amos is quite amazing, I've liked every song on the CD, doesn't happen very often.

Nole, do you like rockabilly? I have a ton of it. Lots of local bands from Canada and Japan. I love Hank Williams. For something older with twang is Wanda Jackson. She comes from a country background but is the Queen of Rockabilly.

On my tv at the moment is the Live Aid concert from 1985 and later i will put on the Live Earth concert from last year. It's a bit of a worry though i know more of the bands from the '85 concert than i do from the '07 concert, oh well probably a good way to get exposed to some new music.

I love the Live Aid concert. 1984-86 were great years for activism and music. And wasn't that one of Queen's last concerts?

Just got this crazy CD with a gift certificate from work. It's Brian Eno & David Byrne's My life in the Bush of Ghosts. It was an experiment they released in 1981. I love both of the artists originally and was interested in how they wanted to create a CD that never included either of their distinct voices. Highly, highly recommend it. Finally listened to the Tori Amos CD I bought way back. I may have to forfeit my Man Card for saying this, but it's fantastic! I'd have to be in the right mood to hear it, but that's true of pretty much all music.

For anybody who wants to hear this lyrical theme developed over a 30-year career, join me in my passion for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Pick of the album crop, I'd say: Henry's Dream, Let Love in, Murder Ballads and Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus. But it's all outstanding since Nick got the better of his heroin habit back in about 88. Prior to that, it's a little more hit and miss.
The only problem is that grungy goth-rock blues with shrieking bits about hell and murder etc. isn't to everybody's taste. Mrs Foscolo is very much not a fan.

A few years ago I had a nice littel laptop and was downloading music on a regular basis and taking it into classes on occaision. Worked in well until one day someone snuck into my ofice and stole the laptop. No more music in my classroom. Just recently I've purchased an impysan and have started to DL music and lyrics for school again.
1) I have a very eclectic taste in music, but gravitating towards the mainstream rock of the early 70s. I grew up with guitar heros.
2) I'm having a hard time getting stuff that I want. I have 'puter probs at home and haven't been able to get anything to work except Baidu, and that's pretty limited. So for me the Q isn't what do I have, but what don't I. And reading this thread, my list is getting longer every day! A few things that I'm specifically loing for ATM: Alan Price's music from the movie O Lucky Man, and Eric Idle's song from Life of Brian, Always Look On the Bright Side of Life. I've found a passable cover by Bruce Cockburn, but not a patch on the original.

iTunes was not accessing my internet connection because my firewall was telling it not to. llllllllll But now with the help of the iTunes server and an interfaith team of ministers, priests, rabbis, and mullahs I have cleared the old software out of this Mac-formatted iPod and reset it to work with a computer. uuuuuuuuuu
God, this thing is wonderful. I've never really encountered an MP3-type player that had decent sound before now. It's quite a revelation. bfbfbfbfbf

70pc of youngsters have hearing loss
June 10, 2008
MORE than 70 per cent of young adults suffer from the first sign of hearing loss, a new survey reveals.
Listening to music - played at dangerously loud levels - through headphones could be the cause.
The survey, commissioned by Australian Hearing, found adults aged between 18 and 24 reported suffering from tinnitus or ringing in the ear.
The finding has surprised experts including Professor Harvey Dillon, director of the National Acoustics Laboratory at Australian Hearing.
"That was a real surprise because that was actually more common than the older respondents," Prof Dillon said on Fairfax radio.
"Mostly for the younger people it didn't happen very often, and it didn't last for very long when it did happen. But it did happen.
"And we think that that's probably a warning sign for them."
The report found two thirds of people listened to music through headphones and of those, 60 per cent played music at dangerous loud levels.
Prof Dillon said it could take just weeks for hearing loss to begin.
"That's part of the problem. Although it's happening, definitely, it's happening gradually and slowly and people just don't notice it," he said.
Some 25 per cent of younger people thought that if they damaged their hearing it would get better, he said.
"Older Australians, I might add, were much wiser, almost none of them thought that."
The risk of damage occurred in two stages when people go to concerts or noisy venues. Both occurred inside the inner ear and while one was temporary the other was permanent, he said.
"We tend to notice the temporary loss of hearing and we notice it come back over the next day or two.
"What we don't notice is that at the same time, in the same place but through a different mechanism, there's also a permanent loss going on.
"A few hair cells dying here, a few hair cells dying there and they add up from time to time."
Prof Dillon says safe headphone audio levels were 85 decibels, averaged over an eight-hour day.
There steps people could take to minimise the risk of going deaf from loud music, Australian Hearing ambassador Dr John D'Arcy said.
"Set the volume of your MP3 player at a level that allows you to hear someone at arm's length without them having to shout," he said.
Workers exposed to loud machinery or industrial noise should also wear ear muffs or plugs to protect their hearing.
The survey also revealed many older Australians viewed hearing devices negatively, which could lead to widespread social disadvantage among the elderly.
More than 70 per cent older people surveyed were open to the idea of wearing a hearing device, but most associated them with the terms "old" and "deaf" while one in five believed they were "unsightly" and "ugly".
Human Services Minister Joe Ludwig said modern technology had helped to make devices look less unsightly.
"People might be surprised that many modern hearing devices look more like fashion accessories," he said.
"We know from previous surveys that hearing loss is associated with a loss of intimacy or interaction with family and friends.
"So, if you do start to experience problems, it is important that people go and get tested and find out about the latest high-tech hearing aids."

Dunno. I have pondered this question about many a band. I think Whisper in the Noise are a little more 'out there' than Radiohead, and thus a bit too esoteric to be really famous. But yes I'm surprised that they aren't a little better known in 'indie circles' than they are, as they've already done about 5 albums and they're all pretty decent.

I have been downloading at an insane pace since I picked up my new computer. The previous computer picked up a fatal virus from Limewire, which kind of soured me on downloads. But I am using U Torrent now and have burned more than a dozen CDS with no problem.
My playlist includes Eric Clapton, The Kinks (their mid seventies rock opera period), Slayer, Marilyn Manson, Hoyt Axton (the most under appreciated performer in the history of country music), Howling Wolf, The Who, The Rolling Stones (Let it Bleed...one of the greatest rock albums of all time) and The Police (Synchronicity...still rocks after 25 years)
Also bought an MP4 player. Three years ago I bought a 500 meg MP3 for 350 kuai. Now I can get a 1 gig MP4 for less than 300. How tquickly hings change.

Yes I use my MP3 to block out the spitting noise while I am riding around on my E-Bike. I usually listen to hard house as it seems to be the loudest thing to block out all the noise. When I am home I listen to Robbie Williams, Michael Buble and similiar stuff to that.

Garage Days is great. Reload...not great but does have some good tracks. Has undeserved bad reputation IMO...just too long and loaded with songs that shouldn't have made the final cut.
New York Dolls for me. Saw the remnants at the Beijing Pop Festival, and ever since then I've been dying to hear them again. Their 1973 self titled debut album is one of the great gems of the 70's.

problem with reload is that it was never supposed to be an album on its own.
The band was in the middle of recording a double album ( load + reload) when they were offered the headlining spot at lolapalooza under the condition that they release an album. so they rushed and got the finished tracks out under the name "load" and left the others in. If you actually sit down and listen to both, it's pretty darn good. There are plenty of relevant and catchy songs!
St. Anger was really different and needed a different approach. It did get a lot of mouthing but in the end, it's music.. the band tried something different that worked for some but not the majority.. at least they tried to experiment unlike other bands that become copycats of themselves.

It's got it's own tune. It's also bloody old. Not sure how old, but some of Corvus Borax (I like the name) go way way back into the dim mists of history. Like their war bagpipes stuff. Some of their more recent stuff is new agy pseudo celtic folk pop, though. But it still sounds good. (Plus the traitors play techno in the off season, and it creeps in betimes.)
A lot of their stuff is in German, Croatian, Latin, Old French, Celtic of various kinds, etc etc. Not much in English methinks, or at least I didn't notice any.

I have some mash ups that a friend put together as a 'concept album.' Every track uses Black Sabbath and he mashes the songs up with seriously weird companion tracks. Not all of the mash ups work, but most of them do, with hilarious results. He used "War Pigs" a few times. One mash up uses the slow, brooding opening and it's looped. He then took bunch of soundbites of Wilford Brimley and dropped them in! It starts off flat out funny, just recognizing Wilford Brimley's voice, but then it starts to get warped. It goes from the kind, grandfatherly Brimley to this diabolical Wilford Brimley, cussing up a storm and threatening to kill someone. It builds up to this Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet-ish crescendo that made me laugh so hard I smile thinking about it. So i use iTunes as my music player app. I downloaded the new one, version 8. This Genius setting it has is well... genius. While i do make mixed play lists, I've always had a hard time just downloading one song. I listen to albums. What this means is i have gigs and gigs of music on my hard drive that i really haven't listened to. Now you can make smart play list to listen to them in a rotation but that is using the tags and on any rock album you might have fast and slow songs that work for the album but not for a mix. really? I'm still trying to come to terms with it after 4 or 5 listens... I hate the drums and the vocals so far but I love the guitars and bass! I can't actually recall the last time I listened to an album where the drums and the bass were so out of sync.

Only one listen for me, so maybe I'm a little over excited. A lot of really long songs, but very heavy. Not old school, but I don't think we'll ever see that Metallica again (except in concert of course). Building on the direction they started with St. Anger.
Fair to say that with the exception of "That Was Just Your Life" and "Judas Kiss" not a lot of tracks stay with you after they end. I'll play it a lot over the next couple weeks and render a final verdict.

I spent a train trip today listening to 'Edge of Seventeen'. It was playing through the speakers of the smallest emo kid I have ever seen. He was tiny and probably about 13 but he had the whole eyeliner and hair-brushed-over-the-eyes-cos-I'm-so-emo look. He was nowhere near the edge of 17 and the look on his face made me struggle to stifle a laugh. He was concentrating so intensely with a look of absolute awe for Stevie Nicks. Funny, funny kid.
So, to comment on this thread, I had my ear-thingies in but no music on. I was enjoying watching this kid too much.

D.O.A. . I grew up in southwest BC in the 80s and we had a pretty great punk scene at that time. I used to watch D.O.A. play in a guys basement for 5 bucks a show. One of the great hardcore punk bands of the 80s.
Last week I heard they are are coming to China. Talk about getting a care package from home. Dates in Beijing on Jan 11 and Jan 30. Since getting that news I'm listening to D.O.A. everyday and even set the ringtone on my phone as D.O.A.'s "Waiting For You".

Technically, I know nothing of Colombian music. But last night I watched Perro Come Perro (http://www.ny.remezcla.com/re/article.jsp?a=384) and got a little excited. bfbfbfbfbf It's a gangster film set in Cali.
I tried Limewiring everything I saw in the music credits, but only got hits for Superlitio. Que Vo'hacer and Lo Fi aren't bad ('cept Lo Fi's sung in English and ain't ethnic much.)
What can I tell ya, I'm getting tired of Western music and modern Colombian has a cool sound. afafafafaf Assuming no accordions of course.

Yeah, I paused before typing that, but, like, Lo Fi by Superlitio, it's really not a bad tune, but it could have been written and sung by anyone anywhere. Hell, it could easily be Australian pop straight out of Melbourne--lyrics, tune, beat, sound, the lot. Whereas Perro come perro and Que Vo'hacer, while accessible, seem nonetheless like that have something new to say, if you see what I mean. (So I'll be downloading some other stuff too to see if they hold up.)
Or consider, for another example, Zurdok, they're Mexican, sing in Spanish, and sound like Seattle. They're good, but it's weird listening to something so familiar except for the words.

I recently downloaded the extremely rare 1965 debut album of The Guess Who, Shakin' All Over, which predates Burton Cummings and features Chad Allen on vocals. Great stuff. Sounds like a cross between rockabilly and 60's garage rock.

Right now I'm listening to Mike Patton's (dude from Faith No More) new solo album, Mondo Cane. He's taken a lot of classic Italopop tunes from the '60s and '70s and done them with full orchestral arrangement. But that's not the coolest part. Patton is a big fan of Italian horror and many of these songs are culled from famous composers' contributions to cult Italian horror films, like the theme from Mario Bava's Diabolik, composed by the awesome Ennio Morricone (he scored The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) as well as my favourite, Italian pop craftsman Nico Fidenco.

Maybe she's a smoker. ahahahahah It seems like in the live performances there's a few places where she's not doing all the difficult stuff they did in the studio. I also wondered for a while too if that fast part of the verse wasn't the result of some studio effect that was too hard to do live. And whether or not the bass player was a cokehead.
I've been working my way through Cambodian Rocks. It's not bad, although it's a bit difficult to find something as striking as Dengue Fever.
Still really liking Meta Oun Pong. (It's great, and not on Cambodian Rocks. mmmmmmmmmm)

I like concert music, but I am constantly searching for music to listen to while out running. Mahler just doesn't inspire me to run that extra km.
The trouble is that I'm so sick of the songs I have on my MP3 because they've been there for years. I'm so sick of listenng to old Dsstiny's Child, Justin Timberlake and Chemical Brothers tracks, and I seem to speand half my run clicking the next button.
Does anyone have any suggestions for tracks that put a little bit of rhythm in their run and fool their brain into thinking that their heels have wings on. Bear in mind that coolness is not a prerequisite. For some reason I love running to 'Einie Meanie' by Justin Bieber. The endorphins want what the endorphins want.

I do not know how I found my way back to this, but years ago I saw a film called Walker - directed by Alex Cox (1987) - and remember being struck by the music that played in one particular scene. I liked the music so much I actually held a cassette recorder to the television to record it.
Fast forward twenty-three years and a couple of clicks here and there send me down the rabbit hole. Like rummaging around in the attic, finding items that you forgot you owned, I suddenly find a video of Alex Cox in 2008 re-reading the reviews that Walker received back in 1987. During the short video he criticises a critic that had criticised Joe Strummer's film score. Suddenly I remember the music and can see the scene: Ed Harris walking through the streets whilst chaos reigns around him.
Another search and I find the piece of music. It has a name: Brooding Six. Modern technology means that an Mp3 is just a few clicks away. No need for the cassette recorder this time round.

That makes a good segue: I've been listening to Of Montreal a fair bit lately. Really epic music. And some buddies turned me on to Wire. I had never heard of them before, but they've been active since the 70's. Most their songs are less than 2 minutes long, and they've clearly been ripped off by all kinds of folks. Turns out Elastica copied huge pieces of them.

I don't even need to Giggle anymore. I have an app on my phone that will listen to a piece of music (you can even hum) and tell you what it is. It only needs a few seconds.
A colleague and I went to a local Quiz Night recently. We weren't regulars so we got stuck on an irregular team. One of the irregualrs we got "stuck with" had an Android phone and it had this App on it. Though phones were verbotten, he managed to keep his hidden and when they were doing the music part of the quiz, he managed to get his Android phone to 'recognize" a couple of the songs we were stumped on. But we didn't use it to our advantage. No really, we didn't. bfbfbfbfbf
But the technology amazed me...and I'm not easily amazed.

I got Sara Bareilles' new album sometime last month. She sang the ear worm "Love Song" that was the single on a very great album. This new one, Kaleidoscope Heart is good, if just a little undercooked. If you like syrupy sweet love songs, this one's a keeper. And everybody needs some of those in their lives now and then.

You'll certainly want the Over The Hedge album, with the "Over The Hedge version" of our beloved Rockin' The Suburbs. It has entirely alternate and hilarious new lyrics, and a GREAT spoken interlude by William Shatner as the neighbor across the cul-de-sac.
I normally don't like live albums much, except that Ben Folds' live albums include versions of Rock This Bitch, an apparently completely extemporaneous song that the singer/pianist makes up on the spot...so every version is different. The one done live in Perth with the Western Australia Symphony Orchestra had me in hysterics.
The discography file is a wad- over a gigabyte- and I was hoping I could thin it out to what I wanted. The more I hear, the more it appears I'm keeping ALL of it. akakakakak

3. At the torrent site, browse or search for what you want. Then download the very small torrent file to somewhere you can find on your computer. This small file is a map that Transmission will use to find the big file that you want to keep.
4. Go to the small file and open it using Transmission. Your file will start to download and you can see its progress in Transmission. This may take some time. It depends on how many people are sharing the file. The more there are, the faster it is. It will only download while Transmission is on and running.
There are many torrent applications (called clients) and many torrent sites. Some torrent sites are private (meaning you need an invitation to join), some are paid (I don't use any of them it defeats the purpose of my stealing)
There are ways to to tweak the settings on the client to make the downloads faster, easier etc. You need to check for how appropriate these tweaks might be on your computer.

just discovered a Chinese metal band from the early 90s called Tomahawk... man do these guys rock! freaking heavy old school metal!
Also, one of the few local bands with some sort of "social awareness" component to their music, Omnipotent Youth Society, hailing from the armpit of the world that is Shijiazhuang in Hebei. Fantastic rock reminiscent of early Velvet underground.

Yeah, yeah, I know...it's 80s fluffy danceable Pop...but better than most in the genre. Daryl Hall has a genuinely amazing voice, and at their best the arrangements are outstanding. Seems to sound better now than back when it was getting overplayed to death. aaaaaaaaaa
I've always fancied meself a singer, albeit these days one with a scratchy throat and a wet, hacking cough, and their early hit Rich Girl makes me foam at the mouth. I Can't Go For That don't sound bad, either.
Many years ago I was given a Hall and Oates concert ticket by girl I knew who was trying to avoid a bad date, and gotta admit they blew me away live. It probably didn't hurt that they had legendary guitarist/asshole G.E. Smith handling the lead guitar duties...
Want something meatier? Look for Happy The Man's Retrospective album. I've heard Happy The Man described as having the exotic melodicism of Yes and the compositional complexity of Gentle Giant...a description that seems apt to me, and one that should have at least a few of you out there turning handsprings by now. bhbhbhbhbh

Finally making a torrent work for me, I turned to Spin Magazine's Top 40 Albums of 2010 and successfully downloaded 31 of them. So far I've listened to:
Caribou- Swim: Trippy electronica. Good background music while writing. A keeper.
Cee Lo Green- The Lady Killer: R&B/Motown revival. I had misgivings about this one, especially when I saw a track entitled "Fuck You" ::-) But it's actually a charming song, as is the entire album, a mix of old and new styles. And the man can sing. It will never be my favourite album, but when it comes up on shuffle play I won't hurry past it.
Big Boi- Sir Lucious Left Foot The Son Of Chico Dusty: Rap. One of my least favourite genres, but this stuff is surprisingly sophisticated, has far less profanity than I've come to expect, and contains a ton of variety. My playlist's hiphop and rap content is low for a reason, but I don't mind hearing the odd tune. Big Boi stays.
Best Coast- Crazy For You: They call it Surf Pop, which I figure is close enough. It's wall of sound-type music, sort of a My Bloody Valentine meets laid back Hole, or Voice of the Beehive. It's okay and I'll keep it, but I'd call it an also-ran album.
Crystal Castles: They're named after the arcade game, and sample said game and others... an awful lot. I downloaded not one but two albums... enjoyed it at first, but on the whole it might have been a mistake.

Janelle Monae, whom I had never heard of, made the most diverse album I've checked out so far. her voice is mondo pretty, too. I'm going to need a second listen before I really know what else to say, including how often I expect to listen to it in the future.

If you go get this one, and I sincerely hope you do, be sure and get her magnificent Court and Spark while you're at it. That album has been a major influence on my life and who I am today. (The song Free Man In Paris?? C'mon... agagagagag Not to mention the title song, and so many more...)

A while back the band Dengue Fever made some stir on here. Certainly did with me...I downloaded Venus On Earth and went apeshit over it...and still doing so. bfbfbfbfbf
But, some updates and corrections...
They are not, strictly speaking, a Cambodian band.
They're from the USA...LA, specifically.
The amazing woman doing those amazing lead vocals IS Cambodian, she DOES sing primarily in Khmer, and the band DOES emulate the sounds of Cambodian pop music.
But other than the lead singer, the rest of the band is 'Merkin. They found Chhom Nimol while combing LA's Little Phnom Penh looking for a female singer who could complete the authentic sound they wanted. Turns out she had been a major pop star in Cambodia, from a family regarded there as musical royalty.
The band got its name- and its start- from one of the founders' trip to Phnom Penh with a friend. The founder (now their organist) came home with a pile of cheap bootleg cassette tapes that formed the band's kernel of inspiration, and the friend came home with- you guessed it- dengue fever contracted via mosquito bite.
And there we have it. If you haven't found this album yet...keep lookin'. agagagagag

Kate Bush's new album, Director's Cut.
Ok; it's not exactly new. It's new versions of songs from 'Red Shoes' and 'Sensual World' but hey, the woman's released one album of new music in the last 18 years. I'll take what I can get.
The album is interesting . I can see that the sound on those 2 albums hasn't stood the test of time, but it's going to take me a little while to get used to them. In fact at this exact moment I'm actually listening to the original version of 'This Woman's Work' and I still prefer it.
There's a new version of 'Sensual World' which now has permission to use the original James Joyce lyrics which she was initially refused permission to use. Even though I'm not a fan of the Ulysses source material, I can see how they're an improvement poetically, but some of the other songs are re-jigging absolute classics.
Nick Hornby's last novel was about a rock star who retired suddenly and after a long absence releases an album of the demo versions of his classic 'Blood on the Tracks' legendary work, which inevitably some of his obsessive fans hate.

I simply can't imagine anyone NOT liking Dethklok's music. Sure, it IS brutal and heavy, but it's done to such total perfection that it actually transcends its own genre. Dethklok has brought deathmetal music to its apotheosis, and set the bar so high I fear no one else may ever clear it. The first three songs of Dethklok's first album, Murmaider and Go Into The Water and Awaken , when heard consecutively leave me totally spent. And I want the song Thunderhorse as continuous soundtrack to my life.

You ought to know the name Gilberto Gil. He's a genuine Godfather of modern Brazilian folk, and in turn has influenced artists around the world. Gil was (and still is, I guess) part of a musical movement that even helped shape modern relatively-democratic government in Brazil; it's all in Portuguese and just sounds wonderful. I'm currently listening to his 1970s classic album "Expresso 2222"...and if anything it's fresher and more relevant than ever.

On a lark tried one called Radio Oira out of Latvia, rockin' that Latvian Folk music.
Much to my surprise, a fair amount of the music is...beautiful.
Totally unique.
Exotic and interesting.
Hypnotic.
Some of it is a modern fusion, some of it is obviously WAY old school.

But these vocaloid things are cool. Speech synthesis is apparently much easier for Japanese than it is for English, thus the Miku products. They morphed into metal too, where they're called Hagane Miku.

Vocaloid, voice synthesis for music, is technically much easier for Japanese than English (I think I was reading there's like an order of magnitude difference between the number of discrete sounds or the number of discrete changes between sounds or something), so while English speech synthesis still sounds shit, and even japanese doesn't sound completely right, still they're making arguably (a lot of awful, awful pop, but also) some cool tunes. And it seems to be social media-type communities doing it.
I mean, for god's sake, they gave us DANCEROID!!!!111!!!eleven (http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMzAzMzE2NTAw.html). That Danceroid video is the archetype for hundreds of MMD copies using the software characters for the vocaloids... and their pantsu!!!

I don't speak to native English speakers in my daily life very often. My girlfriend doesn't speak English nor do most of my friends where I live. While I speak English everyday as an English teacher of course, I often worry that I will pick up bad habits and start using Chinglish here and there.
One of the things I do to combat this is I listen to audiobooks and especially podcasts. I commute for various part time gigs and I use that time to listen to sports talk, tech news and whatever else I find interesting.
One podcast that has recently come to my attention is The China History Podcast (http://www.chinahistorypodcast.com/ChinaHistoryPodcast/Home.htm) by Laszlo Montgomery (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2011-06/17/content_12720818.htm). He covers some important episodes in Chinese history and speaks in a calm way while describing some really turbulent times. The weekly podcasts are usually about 30 minutes long and are a good way to start learning about Chinese history.
Sinica podcast (http://popupchinese.com/lessons/sinica) is another excellent English language podcast about China but it looks at contemporary China. The latest episode Morally Adrift? (http://popupchinese.com/lessons/sinica/morally-adrift) from June 12, 2012 is a must listen, especially for expats living in China.
I download them right to my phone but you can use iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/) or get them from the sites themselves.

I primarily use my iPod for exercise and, for some reason, Southern Rock is good for that. I have a nice selection of Canned Heat, The Kentucky Headhunters, Confederate Railroad, ZZ Top and, naturally, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Spiced up with some Robert Palmer, Ramones, "My Sharona" and other stuff....very good for passing an hour on a treadmill agagagagag agagagagag

It's time for my annual post-Xmas push for new tunes. My drive to listen, alphabetically, to all 8700 of my tracks has almost reached the W's, and in all modesty my "top rated" file is a fabulous read. ababababab
But if you don't update your music you rust and grow old. I've hit some sampler sites that offer single tracks (or some portion) and have concluded that music has improved of late. So it's time to gorge and download. here's my plan of action:
1. There's nearly 5 pages of this read to dig back through; that should yield some leads of both new and known artists.
2. References from friends. A weird source: I hit 'like' for Garbage, who released one of my favourite albums of all time (self-titled, 1995; GET THIS ENTIRE ALBUM). They recommended a band called Far From Alaska. I found 4 tracks on Youtube and LOVE them! Unfortunately they don't have a page on Wikipedia, and Torrentz hasn't heard of them either. Brick wall. And my vpn just bugged (I think it's me, not the GFW) so FB won't be any help for the moment.
3. Best-of album articles for 2012. I had a tremendous yield off of 2010, a more meagre one from 2011. The trick is to hit a variety of sites: don't be too snobbish to check out the top 40; accept that half of the hipster list won't be findable; and when in doubt, download first, listen later.
I'll start shortly and update here. Hope we can all get in on the dialogue.

But first I tackled my existing, unlistened-to tracks. I'm up to the letter Y! Less than 200 remaining tracks. I looked ahead and found Japanese albums; thanks to Wikipedia I figured out the artists and album names.
- Ringo Sheena was my biggest acquisition this year. The album I have is Sanmon Gossip, and it's a TREASURE. Get this album! bhbhbhbhbh
- Susumu Hirasawa is also pretty good: electronica with vocals. Accessible and easy on the nerves.
I got the entire discography of Swans. I like it so far, but that's an awful lot of industrial- 8 albums! Their 1st one, Filth, just played; I disliked the 1st track but the rest are good.
Now listening to Sweet Heart Sweet Light by Spiritualized. Think 90's Brit pop meets Velvet Underground- closest I can come. This is another winner. So far so good!
When this one's done I'll switch over to TV shows: my hard drive is getting packed, and that'll free up room.

It's embarrassing, but the first time I heard Einaudi play live and he started the concert with a completely new piece of music, I was really emotional. I thought I'll never see Chopin or Rachmaninov, but here I am now.
That was a long time ago. Now he's a Classical music pop star and his music is everywhere. The review of this latest album in the British paper 'The Independent' reads like a press release. I'm not sure what to make of the album. I always hoped that he'd write orchestral music, and of course he does have orchestras backing him live these days, but he's found his minimalist commercial niche and this album doesn't really deliver any surprises.
Lots of 'serious' Classical music afficienados detest him, but given how rich he must be now, I doubt he cares.

Before I came to China, I spent about two years in Mexico. I came to absolutely LOVE The Gipsy Kings (even though they are NOT Mexican, they are Spanish/Catalan/French).
I have been listening to their music for about 4 months straight now on my MP3. I may be a strange bird, but I go through phases like this sometimes. I spent almost three years in graduate school listening to nothing but Miles Davis. I was doing a lot of writing at that time and I went through a phase when song lyrics really bothered me and I didn't want to hear them at all.

There's one section when some Islamic emissaries, unaware of the invasion, are on the way to Beijing and describe what they think is a hill in the distance but it turns out to be a huge pile of bodies...and the road there is impassable because of blood and other fluids... aoaoaoaoao

'Inspirato' by Yanni.
I really like this album, very much to my surprise. For those of you who don't know Yanni, he's a sort of cross fusion New Age / classical muzak artist. When our students say they like 'classical music' they probably mean the sort of insipid slush that I've always assumed was Yanni's stock in trade. he did last year's Chinese Spring Festival show, which must have been after I went to bed, but I imagine was pretty bad.
However on this album he's got the best (or at least the most famous) opera singers in the world to sing new versions of some of his old songs with newly written lyrics, (all in Italian / Spanish etc, which no doubt is an improvement on the saccharine nonsense of those original versions which had lyrics in English).
The album is so good, (I think my favourite Classical Music album of the year so far) I thought, 'maybe I've got Yanni all wrong' so I loaded up his playlist on Xiami, and listened to the first 5 pieces that came up. When I say listened, the third to fifth ones I only listened to the first few seconds. It was horrible, but so I'm just going to have to regard 'Inspirato' as a fantastic new album by Renee Fleming, Ricardo Villazon etc. My best guess is that the only thing co-producer Placido Domingo let Yanni do was choose the typically naff title for the album.
Let me rant a bit more. Maybe these excerpts from the press release for Yanni's 'masterpiece' will help you understand why loving this album hurts so much.
This is a one of a kind album, there has never been another album like this and there will never be another album like this.
Opera singers singing with an orchestra! I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there have been other albums like this.
Another fascinating tale lies behind the wordless song 'Ode A L'Humanite, based on YANNI's version of the 'Flower Duet' from Delibes' opera 'Lakme'. When the South African youngster Pretty Yende heard this on a television advertisement for British Airways, it sparked her love of the sound of the operatic voice, so much so, that it fired her with a desire to become an opera singer herself. Having overcome enormous hurdles, she is now one of the brightest new stars in the opera world, and has appeared in major roles at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera - and all thanks to inspiration from YANNI.
You know what. I 'm going to give a little (99.99%) of the credit to Delibes.

I am discovering not all Northern Soul is equal. One 3CD collection called, you guessed it, "Northern Soul - the Collection" was superduper. Most of the tunes I picked out above come from there. But another collection, "Move On Up: The Best of Northern Soul" seems to have been an exercise in some special kind of irony, for the tunes are very, very not-best. They have on display very solidly their b-side nature, but not in a good way. I am looking forward to another collection, any other collection.

Is it okay if I say he's a bit of a moaner? His voice is very familiar from years of listening to Australian radio. But I'm just not sure about modern Oz blues. I want to say it's a bit thin. Probably an unfair comment.
The old blues and r&b stuff I'm listening to these days is just found singles. The genre called "Northern soul" has blues and r&B at one end and disco at the other, and motown in the middle. That's where I'm finding this stuff - collections of singles from that dance movement. I have always been a singles listener rather than an album guy, so the gigantic "keeping the faith" collections you find online are tailor made for me.

I listen to a lot of music. Or, rather, I often listen to music on my Sansa. Not sure what I will do when it breaks.
But I listen to many songs repeatedly, and when I listen to something new, I do not think, "Oh! I must tell the folks on Raouls what I am listening to!"
Do you really want me to post every time I repeat "See You Again", or "Spirit of Radio", or "Self Esteem", or "She Builds Quick Machines"? I didn't think so. Some days I listen for hours.
I see no point in listing the songs I listen to, I'm well over 99% sure no one cares, and it's a PITA to do so.

My music posting policy:
I have determined over the years that I don't have musical taste. I do however have enthusiasms. Having no refined tastes, I tend not to hold on to music. If I start hearing a thing too often on the home jukebox, there's a good chance it'll get deleted. I tend also to like singles rather than albums. I tend to have a big backlog of things I haven't heard yet - collections of "classic soul" or some album acquired off the back of liking one passage of one song I heard on one tv show - and I work through them listening for something I can listen to again. If I find one I'm willing to play again a few times, that's the tune for the day, and I'll hang onto it for a while until I've played it out. Usually post it too.
For the purposes of finding copies to post, this correspondent enjoys cutting and pasting mp3 title info to, in the following order:

There are probably other sites, but those are the ones that work for me. Baidu in particular used to be a good source for immediately playable links, but these days I seem to have to go more often to the horrible music.baidu.com, which has, in my estimation, a poopy and unhelpful player that isn't nice.

Long, long ago, EMI Australia released this: Marc Bolan – 20th Century Boy (https://www.discogs.com/Marc-Bolan-20th-Century-Boy/release/3862943). Which I in a fit of who knows what did one day purchase as, I believe, a two cassette tape pack. Might have been three cassettes. And definitely second-hand. Well I'll tell you, it's not available in any form and dammit, it is the only "album" I know by heart. I cannot really listen to other compilations because nothing follows as it should. So, gol' dangit, I got some other 4CD compilation and recreated the track list. Some of the versions are not quite right ("Mustang Ford" for instance, what the hell?!), and the timing between tracks is off, but Christmas is Marc Bolan and I have my own present.

I should maybe point out I don't have musical tastes. There are probably recognizable themes in what I listen to, but I don't pay much attention to them. What I have in lieu of all that are musical enthusiasms. Interests of the moment. It seems obvious to me therefore to spend a moment each day highlighting what I am literally right then listening to.
Also, that my enthusiasms are usually by their nature transient, I'm hard pressed to see myself as the owner of this thread even if all the snobby music snobs with their snobby snob sounds no one else posts. I just assume no one else wants to share.

As if to prove a point...
I heard this first last night, as the credits tune for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It's not very special as a tune, but as a song it surprises me with that one thought that is this really the first time to hear "I gotta be a man, I gotta be the man" turned into something different because it's sung by a woman, seemingly seriously, and especially in context of the other lyrcis? What makes it interesting, compelling even, is how it isn't immediately a rejection. The song appears not to be rejecting "man" as a role and even seems liberating because of it??!?

I Met Jin Yong once while having dinner at the Shangri-La in Hangzhou. He was at the table next to mine and the two women with me recognized him but were two shy to approach him. I recognized his name and knew he was an honarary VP at my university so as a "fellow colleague, I went over and ontoduced myself and the two women to him. He spoke excellent English and told me he'd rather be sitting at my table than with the two stiffs he was with. Then he asked me to take sa picture of him with my two friends.
