Title: Shaving (guys and girls)
Post by: The Hiphoppopotomous on October 07, 2010, 05:48:34 PM
This is obviously only a personal gripe, but my god! There is something about this that really annoys me.

I know that it is natural for a girl to not shave her armpits, and that there is nothing wrong with it, and yet most girls here seem to, and it's nice. But it really creeps me out when girls who dont shave their armpits wear really strapless tops. It's like, hair everywhere! I guess it's just the culture I was brought up in, and it would be irrational to expect everyone else to conform to British norms, but they should anyway.

And guys, if they can only grow a three hair mustache, why not just keep shaving? little pube moustaches look so stupid! It makes me want to shave them! I want to shave other men! this is what it has come to!

Yeah so the shaving thing is the only thing in China that really bothers me (other than the beggar at Bayi Square who doesnt have a face)

Maybe so, but still, even the Greek shave their armpits!

Yes, totally agree.  And they should not spit or urinate or defecate in public.  And they should chew with their mouths closed.  And provide tissue in the bathrooms. And, and, and...

Shaving - or not - is cultural and you have chosen to live in their country.  I, too, find it ewwy to look at.  Gotta agree with you on the men and any attempts to grow a reasonable facsimile of a mustache or beard.  Also creepy for me are the moles with inches-long hair growing out of them.

Nothing at all, a light hearted joke?

Anyway, I obviously accept that I am in a country who stick to their own culture. The spitting and pissing doesn't really bother me so much, although I did see a guy walking down the street with his wang hanging out last week which was a little weird.

Sorry, I'll try to remember to zip up next time. ahahahahah

Personally, a little bit of underarm hair doesn't bother me.  Chinese girls don't have much compared to their unshaven western counterparts.

I do find the attempts at facial hair amusing.  Only about 1 in 10 Chinese who try for a beard or mustache seem to succeed.

Definitely agree about those mutant moles with the looooong hairs sticking out. aaaaaaaaaa

haha my grandma has mutant hair moles and a small moustache so I'm kinda used to that.

There was only one girl who was really bad, and he r armpit hair was like Ivy, working its way around her shoulders. She was speaking at the front of the class and it was a little distracting, but in class I suppose it doesn't really matter, as I'm not one who will think of students in a potential partner kind of way.

It really is weird to think that it is just the done thing in the western world, and that girls must actually put a lot more effort into shaving everywhere. Never really thought about it before (not exactly a mental picture that I want either)

Oh and on a side note, is it actually true that if you shave regularly, your face hair will grow faster than if you dont? My friend said that it was a myth, but I've always found it to be true.

Peter Hessler describes a guy's mustache (http://www.thechinabeat.org/?p=1620) by saying, "like a lot of Chinese facial hair, it was a work in progress".

Our college back home had to address this issue on a regular basis. It went something like:
- college (13-18yr old) has grooming regulations, including reference to being clean shaven
- boy wants to look cool with the girls does not shave
- mother arrives at school and goes off her head
- do we not realise that shaving at the tender age of 16 will result in their son becoming covered in hair like an ape?
= threats are made to withdraw the boy (not seen as threat by us  awawawawaw)
- father writes to the Board of Trustees threatening legal action
- BofT refer it back to us

Our Deputy-Principal came up with a standard letter that was based on something like following:

Quote
The myth

Shaved hairs grow back thicker, faster or darker.

The “truth”

This belief is held optimistically by youths trying to grow moustaches, wearily by women taking a razor to their legs for the thousandth time, and desperately by balding men who haven’t had much luck with the goose fat and monkey hormones. But shaving cuts hair only at the surface of the skin – while it’s below the skin that hair growth takes place – so whatever you do to hair that’s already dead can have no effect on what’s coming up.

All authorities seem to agree on that much, but there are various theories to explain the illusion that shaved hair grows back stronger, including: small amounts of growth on a shaven face (or any other area of the body, come to that) are more noticeable than on a hairy face; because hairs taper, their shaved remnants are of greater diameter than long hairs, and blunt rather than soft, making them appear darker and thicker and feel coarser; hairs of uniform length look darker; changes in the length of growing hair are proportionally much greater the shorter the hair, making growth seem fastest soon after shaving; and newly-emerged hairs may be darker before the sun gets a chance to bleach them.

It worked - and we could could get on with trying to educate their son.

And what happened afterwards? Did you get used to it, or was it too much?

I live in USAnia during the hay days of Lilith fair when it was all about armpit hair and stinky rebellion ( I mean that in the nicest possible way) and kinda got over it then and there... when I moved to China in '04, I didn't even notice it! That said, for as long as I have been here, I've never dated a local lady so I've never had to deal with the issue on a personal up-close basis....

that said, it's not as common in Beijing as it is in other areas I've visited/lived in

When I was at a medical college, I was teaching the nurses. A fair number of them were trimmed in summer.

With some of the girls I've dated, about a third trimmed the privates

Perhaps you could ask him why he has one and what it means to him.  Then you could ask him what he thinks other Chinese people think about facial hair.  Once you understand his perspective you are better informed about whether or not to offer your opinion.

I spent a whole semester teaching my public speaking students not to say "thank you for listening" at the end of their speeches, only to find out that the Chinese judges are actually looking for this. It's a cultural difference.  You've got to figure out the cultural context before offering your cultural perspective, I think.

For some Chinese women, the armpit hair is their biggest visual proof they she's a big girl now.

"Toes", she said huskily. "I just loved curly-haired toes. I'll do anything for curly haired toes" Then she bent down closer and whispered in his ear. "If only you give me the ring"
