Train from Beijing to Hanoi

Over winter holiday, I want to visit Beijing and then take the train to Hanoi.  I know it is long, but it is sooooo much cheaper than flying.  Has anyone done this before?  Experiences/advice/warnings?

Mimi, I'm coincidentally planning the same trip around December 20.  I haven't found anyone who's done it either, but I do have this website:

A really great read -- if a bit dated -- on this subject is Riding the Iron Rooster by Paul Theroux. He was unable to do what you folks are aiming to do, but that was 20 or 25 years ago, before the "opening up" policy. Perhaps it's easier now.
