I lived in Zhengzhou for a while. It was a miserable place and I left. Also had a lot to do with my job/living situation, so take this with a grain of salt. But Zhengzhou has very little boast.
If people here are saying that the pollution is average then I guess it is, but then, I've been to many cities in China (as a traveler, not to stay) and I don't recall the pollution being anywhere near as bad as in Zhengzhou. I would come home after a few hours downtown and my clothes would just reek with the pollutants they would absorb, and didn't stop reeking until I stopped noticing it. From the window of the office I worked in, six floors up, I could spot no less than four coal power plants in the near vicinity (this was at the poorer, western edge of the city).
Culturally, it has very little to offer. I disagree with Lotus Eater that the little museum they have is "great". It has a few rooms of artifacts and some attractive female tour guides, but it won't eat up more than a couple hours, max, and you aren't likely to ever have a reason to go back. In terms of preserved architecture, interesting old neighborhoods, etc., there's basically nothing. The major tourist spot is Er Qi pagoda. There is, of course, lots of interesting things to see nearby Zhengzhou: Shaolin, Kaifeng, Luoyang... it is actually a very history-rich area.
Anyways, I could go on, but you get the point. I had a bad reaction to Zhengzhou, which isn't to say that you will. Let me know if you have any more specific questions about the city. I'm afraid I don't know anything about the school you mentioned.
