Title: Hockey
Post by: Day Dreamer on September 24, 2009, 04:48:02 AM
Forget boys in shorts who fall down like they've been shot if you tap them on the shoulder.

IT'S HOCKEY SEASON BABY!

Hello out there, were on the air it's hockey night tonight!
The tension grows, the whistle blows, and the puck goes down the ice.
The goalie jumps, and and the players bump, and the fans all go insane.
Someone roars: "Bobby Scores!" At the good old hockey game!

Ohhhhhhhhh!
The good old hockey game!
Its the best game you can name!
And the best game you can name,
is the good old hockey game!

Second Period.
Where players dash, with skates a-flash, the home team trails behind.
But they grab the puck, and go bursting up, and their down across the line.
They storm the crease, like bumblebees, and they travel like a burning flame.
We see them slide the puck inside, its a one one hockey game!

Ohhhhhhhhh!
The good old hockey game!
Its the best game you can name!
And the best game you can name,
is the good old hockey game!

Third Period.
Last game in the play-offs too.
Oh take me where, the hockey players, face off down the rink,
And the Stanley Cup, is all filled up, for the champs who win the drink!
Now the final flick, of a hockey stick, and a one gigantic scream:
"THE PUCK IS IN! THE HOME TEAM WINS!" At the good ol hockey game

Ohhhhhhhhh!
The good old hockey game!
Its the best game you can name!
And the best game you can name,
is the good old hockey game!

Poetic justise, Phoenix wins it all, hahahaha

Since Day 1 Game 1 in 1979 I have been a die hard Oilers fan. I can tell you who their first game in the NHL was against (Chicago in Chicago) They lost 4-2 Kevin Lowe scored the first goal with an assist from the Great One.
I think they will do well this year with maybe a second round exit from the playoffs.
At least they'll do better that Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa.

I think you're right about Toronto. Improved defensively, but still 9th place, just behind the aerial picture of the swirl in the toilet bowl. Antropov might score as many goals for New York as Kessler for TO. And bang more bodies, though that's not his thing.

I'm not sure what to make of Ott, now that they've lost / got rid of Heatly. My guess is it will take half the season for that team to gell, if at all. IF they do however, they've got the depth to be pretenders.

Montreal is seriously imploding, and will probably finish behind TO this time around.

Vancouver didn't have the breakout season they hoped for. It's nice that a hard-working guy like Sundin had a part-time job to occupy a few of his idle retirement hours, but he wasn't what they needed. Don't see them getting past any of Det, SJ, Anah or Chi. Well no, SJ just committed seppuku (took Heat from Ott), but you know what I mean.

Don't know what to make of Edm and Calg.

Love that Stompin' Tom. It is the best game you can name.
I like Pit and Det to give us another long, hard-fought final
Title: Re: Hockey
Post by: Day Dreamer on September 27, 2009, 04:03:03 AM
Vancouver wanted Sundin to take the twins under his wing (no pun intended).

Edmonton/Calgary: anything from 4th to tenth.

I like San Jose, but they've disappointed too often.

I know in Philadelphia, they're already planning the Stanley Cup parade. Unfortunately, its going right between Ray Emery's legs

Washington is my dark horse in the East. Also, as long as Marty Brodeur is alive, the Devils have a shot.

Detroit-Pittburgh finals? I could live with that 10 years in a row. Smart business dealings, sound drafting, key players and a good offence/defence system.

GO LEAFS GO (yea, right)
Title: Re: Hockey
Post by: pydilyk on September 27, 2009, 04:45:20 AM
I'm hoping the Bruins can actually do something in the playoffs this year after last year's pathetic loss to the Canes. Young guys should step up and fill in scoring gap created by Kessel trade. I'm glad we got rid of him, he's a greedy player and really soft. He might start season with Leafs strong (in november or whenever he straps on a pair and gets back on the ice), but as soon as he gets injured, which is inevitable, he won't be the same for the rest of the season. Krejci and Wheeler will play a big role for Boston, along with the young defense. Biggest letdown of the year is I would have had tickets to the Fenway game if I was back home.

Title: Re: Hockey

Why can't Hamilton get an NHL team? Because then Toronto will want one too.

One thing I like about Washington is their coaching. Last year Boudreau managed to get the most out of his supporting cast, so that it wasn't all Ovi. It's hard to predict the East, because so many teams have so many variable and there's so little to choose between some of them.

I stand corrected: Ted has won 2 titles, DS and I each 1.

Okay, kids, the league is up.  The season starts Oct.1.... That's Thursday!!!  aoaoaoaoao  So go to Yahoo Sports, click Fantasy at the top right, then look for our custom league: chinaadhockeyleague.  The password is lannymcdonald .  bfbfbfbfbf

All the settings will be the same as before: 4 Centers, 4 Left wingers, 4 Right wingers, 5 Defensemen and 2 Goalies can start every day; as well there are 4 Bench slots and 1 Injured Reserve slot.

It is a rotisserie league: skaters will amass numbers in 7 categories, namely Goals, Assists, Penalty Minutes, +/-, Power Play Points, Game Winning Goals, and Short-handed Goals; goaltenders will chip in on 4 categories: Wins, Goals Against Average, Save Percentage, and Shutouts.

The raw numbers aren't the thing; teams are ranked in each category.  If, say, there are 6 teams, the team with the most goals will get 6 points, the team in second will will 5, etc.  The trick is to do consistently well in most or all categories, so over the course of the season it's important to tinker with your lineup for balance.

Okay, kids, let's get cracking!

When Jack Kent Cook [a Canadian] first started the LA Kings, he said it would be a sure shot winner, after all, there are 600,000 Canadians in the LA area. After poor attendance, he opined, "Now I know why they left Canada!"

Question, Con. The players listed in my team are "Pre-Draft Player Rankings".  Is this my actual team? Or will they be drafted elsewhere? I have Niklas Backstrom listed twice.
Title: Re: Hockey
Post by: Con ate dog on September 28, 2009, 10:44:03 PM
They are 2 different players with the same name, ironically placed consecutively in the power rankings.  jjjjjjjjjj

Your "pre-draft power rankings" are the order in which the computer will pick for you, given who is available, and how many open slots you have in each position.  You may move some players up or down as you see fit.  The autodraft will select everyone's team, subject to how each of us twiddle the guys on their list.

4 teams so far...

So if I leave them as they are. I will (at the moment) get only 1 in 4.  Dui bu dui?
mmmmmmmmmm
Let's put it this way.  Draft order will be chosen by the computer.  Say there are 8 teams, nobody modifies their default draft list, and George picks second: you'll get players #2, 10, 18, etc. until the computer notes you have, say, 2 cters and no defensemen, at which point it will even things out somewhat.

i.e. Your pre-draft list is your wishlist for players, in order of priority.  The default setting, those players in that order, conform to how the Yahoo brain trust feels they will do this season; they are, of course, partly wrong, so don't feel shy about moving some names about.  Heck, one year I moved names according to a complex system involving the vowels in their last name.  Made me feel like I had an impact.  :alcoholic:

NOTICE: My brother offered meC Olli Jokinen for RW Phil Kessel; I accepted because I have too many right wingers, all of whom are too good to drop.  They were ranked about the same at the beginning of the season, and are producing about the same.  I get more penalties and assists, Ted gets more goals.

I think it's quite fair (or I wouldn't have gone for it), but if you look and take exception, feel free to vote against the trade.  You have 3 days.  bjbjbjbjbj

The Gorgeous Georges and Calgary Cowpokes just made a blockbuster trade.  Old bean, this is a great win-win trade: you've traded a guy who pots goals, which you no longer need, for goaltending, which you desperately do; my brother gains vice versa.

The trade with DS is interesting.  I can't call it unfair... but it could go either way.  I predict that'll prove to be a win-lose deal, but I wouldn't bet my rent on which party would gain at the other's expense.

Raoul, miraculously, you're not in that bad a spot.  Thank your goalies for that.  If you rotate your players aggressively enough you should make up most of those missed games.

It's the first day of school and the teacher thought she'd get to know the kids by asking them their name and what their father does for a living.

The first little girl says: "My name is Mary and my daddy is a postman."

The next little boy says: "I'm Andy and my Dad is a mechanic."

Then one little boy says: "My name is Jimmy and my father is a loser who prefers to lay on the couch all day and watch TV, while Mom goes off to work to support us."

The teacher gasps and quickly changes the subject, but later in the schoolyard the teacher approaches Jimmy privately and asks if it was really true what he had said about his father.

He blushed and said, "I'm sorry but my dad plays hockey for Team USA, and I was just too embarrassed to say so."

The ironic thing is that Slovakia beat Bulgaria 82 - 0 in September '08 to qualify for this tournement.

That was not a typo, 82 - 0!    bibibibibi  And it wasn't a collection of games, only 1

The biggest upset in women's hockey was when Sweden beat America last time. It was the only time either Canada or the States had lost to any other country than each other, ever

AdamS- I saw a period and a half of it. The inlaws turned on the Ogames for my benefit  akakakakak, and the game happened to be about 8 minutes old. And the score was already 4-0. So I explaned a few of the fine points to my wife, but with all the play in one end, it wasn't exactly Howie Meeker's Hockey School.

DD, was it Sweden that did the damage? It was a surprise at the time. Or should I say a wake-up call? Canada and the USA currently dominate, but the traditional hockey countries are beginning to catch up. Sooner or later it will be a more competitive sport, and a better sport for it.

right now i am watching the group B game. USA v China. I must say our chinese girls have heart if not the skills. Word up, Adam.  Team China gives up a huge size advantage, and their defensive coverage needs a HUGE amount of work, but that goalie made some flash saves (and let in a coupla weak goals), and they've got some good passing.  China should be pleased with their shunny chicks.  bjbjbjbjbj

I agree con, The chinese goalie did do some pretty good work out there. She just could not stand up to the pressure that her defence left her. Ovechkin is going to have nightmares about Weber for weeks.
Americans dumped the Swiss, which means we don't have to see Hiller in the final. Might have to see Miller again though, and that man is hot.
Slovaks had their A game against the Russians, but can they keep it up against the Swedes? My guess is not. Lundqvist is another A-list goaltender, so Sweden-Canada will be a good battle. Who were the other 2 quarter-finalists, Czech Republic and Finland? I like the Finns, but again a close contest. If Miller stays hot, Americans should handle either of them. Could well be USA-Canada in the final. Expect a loud crowd and an exciting game.

Good chance for Canada to win the most golds now. 2 good chances in Curling and Hockey. Canada has 7 now that they came 1 and 2 in women's bobsled.

CANADIAN WOMEN WIN GOLD!

It was a hard fought match to be sure. Those ladies do not hold back.

Now let's see if the men can do the same...

Ha ha maybe after the party, though some swing a different way.

There's the blonde, the brunette, the bottle and the can

The beer is called Molson Canadian

Speaking of preggers, the extra for the Canadian woman's curling team is 5 months along. She got into a match earlier.

Got up early to check the score: CAN 2-1 USA after 2 periods. Surfed around a bit, checked again and USA scored with a half minute to play and sent it into OT. Crosby scored in OT to win it for Canada, 3-2.

What a game.

Those gold medals looked terrific around Team Canada's necks.

You have to hand it to the Americans, though, they played a hell of a game.

Before the game, there was something about the uniform I didn't like. I'm no fashion designer, but it looked like it could use a little accessory. After the game I realized what complimented a red and white shirt with a Big Fat Maple Leaf in the middle:

           A         GOLD         FUCKING          MEDAL           BABY!

The game, carried in Canada on nine national networks and in eight languages, became the most-watched television broadcast in Canadian history. An average of 16.6 million Canadians, or about half of the nation's population, tuned in.

And about 80 percent of the population, or 26.5 million people, watched at least part of the game.

Only qustion is:

WHAT THE HELL WERE THE OTHER 20% WATCHING?

Dear Diary, I love Canada!

Aug: 12 Moved to our new home in Canada It’s so beautiful here. The grasslands and hills are so serene and picturesque. Can hardly wait to see them with snow covering them. God’s country . . .  I love it here.

Oct. 14 Canada is the most beautiful place on Earth. The leaves are turning all different colors. I love the shades of red, yellow, and orange. Went for a ride through some beautiful woodland forest and spotted some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly, they are the most beautiful animals on Earth. This must be Paradise. I love it here.

Nov. 11 Deer season will start soon. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to kill such an elegant creature. The very symbol of peace and tranquility. Hope it will snow soon. I love it here.

Dec. 2 It snowed all night. Woke up to find everything blanketed with white. It looked like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. We had a snow ball fight (I won) and when the plow came by he plowed the snow back into our driveway. I shoveled the driveway again. What a beautiful place. Mother Nature in Perfect Harmony. I love Canada.

Dec. 12 More snow last night. I love it. The snowplow did his trick again (that rascal). A winter wonderland! I love it here.

Dec. 19 More snow last night. Couldn’t get out of the driveway to get to work this time. I am exhausted from too much shoveling. Friggin snowplow.

Dec. 22 More of the white shit fell last night. I’ve got blisters on my hands from shoveling. I think the snowplow driver hides around the corner and waits until I’m done shoveling the damn snow off this driveway. Asshole.

Dec. 25 “White Christmas”, my busted ass… More friggin snow. If I ever get my blistered hands on the son-of-a-bitch who drives that piece of shit snowplow, I swear I’ll castrate that bastard. Don’t know why they don’t use more salt on the roads to melt the friggin ice.

Dec. 29 More white last night. Been inside since Christmas Day except when shoveling out the driveway after Snowplow Harry comes. Can’t go anywhere. Car is buried in a mountain of White Shit. The weatherman says to expect another ten inches of the shit tonight. Do you know how many shovels of snow ten inches is?

Jan. 1 Happy Friggin New Year. The weatherman was wrong again. We got 34 inches of the white shit this time. At this rate, it won’t melt until the 4th of July. The snowplow got stuck up the road and the shithead driver had the balls to come to the door to borrow a shovel. After I told him that I’ve broken six shovels already shoveling the shit he pushes in my driveway, I broke my last shovel over his friggin head.

Jan. 4 Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get food and another shovel. On the way home a God-Damn deer ran out in front of the car, and I killed the bastard. Did about 3 grand damage to the car. Those friggin beasts should be slaughtered. Wish the hunters had killed them all in November.

May 3 Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing is rotting out from all the friggin salt they keep dumping on the road? Car looks like a shit box.

May 10 Moved to Texas. Can’t imagine why anyone in there friggin right mind would ever want to live in that God-forsaken country called Canada!

Well, kids, we're in the home stretch, and as I figured I'm in a footrace with my brother.

Some things to consider in these last weeks:

Maximum games. On your team page, scroll down; on the left there is box detailing the number of man-games you have played at each position (each slot in your roster can play 82 games), the number of games you have remaining, and whether you are ahead of or behind pace.

If the last number is green and says +[whatever], this is a good thing.  It means you will play all the games you've been allotted at this position, which is exactly what you want.  If that + number is high, though, consider the games you have remaining at that position: which player(s) do you want to tally those last games? Take your least productive guy and leave him on the bench.

If, however, that last number is red and says -[whatever], this is bad.  You won't tally all the games to which you're entitled!  Look at your roster and consider adding a player or 2 (or more) at that position, dumping players from + positions.  I'm +14 at left wing, so I dumped a LWer for another defenseman.

Categories.  This is a rotisserie league; our teams are ranked from 1st to 7th in 11 separate categories.  It's time to look at all the raw numbers: where are your close races?  Where are you likely to gain or fall?  I'm 2nd in goals; I'm never going to catch George, and nobody's going to catch me, so I don't give a shit about this category.

My brother. Aren't you sick of him winning this pool?  He's made huge advances in the last month, NONE of it from me.  He's picking your pockets, kids, and you can get yours back if you play it smart.  Mao knows my brother will.

Yah I was unaware of this max games rule, so look for me to start dropping soon. I think I was plus 45 for center and plus 20 for right wing when I hit the max, so not getting many points these days.

Thanks, old bean.  bjbjbjbjbj

For those who might have missed it, here's a letter from my brother.

     Hey ,

You have just been sent the following note from Calgary Cowpunks (Capt. Cowpunk) in the Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Hockey league named China ad hocKey League (216298)...

Wow.

1 more PPP and Con and I would have tied. 1 PPP. 1 sleepy second assist from the blueline on a meaningless PPG and we'd be sharing the podium! 1 point or 100, it is all in the books now - Con is the 2009 Pool Champ!

Of course, there are many categories and many questions for managers to sort out for next year, but for now and for my money, that was a kick-ass pool!

This has been the best year yet, IMHO, with plenty of jockeying early on and then a thrilling end that wasn't decided until the final day of play... What more can one ask of a hockey pool?

Bragging rights are Con's for another year. He built up a massive lead for the bulk of the year, and held off the charge to bring home the trophy - Nice work.

Kudos to all for a year with plenty of trades, FA signings, and other intrigue. (The Crosby/Luongo swap was a blockbuster, and really shook thing up!)

Congrats to Wuhan for taking the 3rd place hardware, and pushing for more...

Lemons to Raoul for falling off and letting his team flounder unmanaged, but in all fairness he has been really busy doing... um, what is it that you do again, Raoul? ;]
Ed: Raoul completely forgot about the pool until it was half over.  ahahahahah)

(Ditto PS2Fandemonium - We hardly knew ye...)

Lemonade to George for once again competing so strongly for a spot in the top 3 without ever having seen a hockey game! Nice work!

Condolences to the Dragons, who I had picked for the top team based on the draft. Sometimes a great team on paper just doesn't show up on the ice until it is too late, and this is what happened to Dragon Saver. Next year, next year...

See you all next year!
