WTF?  So they could rip you off more effectively or something?

BTW, there's a couple of more hospital/doctor stories in this old thread.

I assume this guard was going to get a nice kickback from whatever treatment I required from his doctor friend. Whatever he was planning to do, it was creepy as hell!

The guard told my husband if he didn't let me see the doctor unaccompanied, he would kill him. And that was my experience at the best hospital in the country.
Stories like these show me the positive side of not speaking Chinese.

I went to a smaller hospital that specialized in bone care and had everything taken care of within a half hour without waiting at all.
Nice that you finally got some service. I was dubious back in 2006/7 when I was told such and such was the best hospital in Guangzhou, but after hearing first hand success stories for several years and nothing negative, I figure there's something to it.

Xiehe hospital is nuts because you have all of these out of towners coming in to get specialized treatment for their hard to treat illnesses that their podunk town doctors can't handle. There are always massive lines and people even camp out overnight to try and gua hao with a specialist. It IS the best hospital in the city and arguably the country, so it is exactly the kind of place that is really primed for dishonest people to take advantage.

However, at Xiehe, around back, there is the International Clinic. It is much pricier -- 100rmb to gua hao, but the service is good and there is rarely much of a wait. No funny business either. I go to the dentist there and he's awesome, he runs a pain free dental clinic and true to the name, I've had a tooth pulled and a root canal and haven't felt pain yet. We also have our kids' vaccinations done there because they use imported vaccines and give us a bilingual record so that if we ever move back to the States we won't have difficulty with the immunization records. Not bad. We don't go there for regular day to day stuff, we just go to our local military hospital (304), but it is a good bet if you need a bit more attention than the regular hospital can provide.
